He does not appear to be using the large knuckle joint for picado. I cannot tell if its just an illusion from that angle. It really looks like he's driving mainly from the middle joint. He's crazy good.

This reminds me of when I lived in Sevilla, I would hang out with Riqueni at his house. I was 19 and he was 14! He did stuff like this for hours just resolving, chords, scales harmonies in his subconscious almost as we chatted. Memorizing to say the least!

no, it's an illusion. Other videos are more obvious but he drives from big joint like EVERY other fast player.

Thanks for posting this. I love this sort of thing too.

I made a rough tab of one part. I was wondering what you call this scale pattern. To me it seems to B Dorian, two steps before C# Phrigian obviously related to the key of A Major.

What I find strange is that this pattern seems to be used a lot in flamenco but I have never seen a Dorian shape written with this fingering in guitar books.

I guess the 'textbook' dorian shape there would be to shift to the 6th position for strings 3 and 4. Which brings up an interesting point - in guitar fingerings there is often a choice between staying in one position and dealing with the extra stretches, or else shifting positions more often to minimise stretches (and in many cases the use of the little finger). Jazz players seem to shift positions extensively, whereas flamenco players (along with metal and classical) favour staying in position from what I've seen.

Yeah that is interesting, I haven't really seen Dorian written out like that, but maybe thats because I am not a metaller and been looking at jazz books. I think I am gonna practice it, it seems like an important pattern to nail after major, minors and phrygian.

It's not dorian. It's mainly C# phyrgian dominant (mode 5 of F#harmonic minor) the alternating note in the scale is E# and E natural (the third of C# chord or scale) so you get at the normal occurance melodically I prefer to think of simply as "Spanish phrygian" as the interchageablity of the major or minor third produces a characteristic hybrid of two scales, natural phyrigian and phrygian dominant. The final note is the 7th degree and can thought of as the tension wanting to resolve to C#. Dorian need not come into play at all in passages like this. Dorian concept works better if say in this type of song form in C# phyrgian, when you hear the F# minor chord the melody uses a D# to color with Dorian flavor. Other wise it all works out simply in key of C# spanish phrygian.

Thats interesting. I guess I was thinking of modes incorrectly as finger patterns rather than harmonic structures. I tend to to practice phrygian with my 1st finger starting at on the 6 string.

So for C# Phrygian I would put my 1st finger on the bottom string at fret 9 and move up from there.

Because this run concluded with 1st finger on B I was thinking, ok this is B dorian. So it seems there are many positions flamenco guitarists use to play phrygian. This one seems very common.

Do you know any examples pieces that do this this, or Flamenco pieces where you can say that bit had a Dorian flavour ? I think I need to train my ears a bit more.

Could we alter this run to be Dorian ?

I'll give you a tip on hearing the modes... Dont change the tonic!

Ok, thats it.. now go practice all the modes with the same tonic and in no time you'll have them under your fingers, on your mind and ears too

Sure. First play a Bminor6 chord, then play this same run but change all E# to E natural, then play the Bminor6 again at the end as a reference.

If the tune you use this run over only has Bm7 and E7 chords for example, its a fine Dorian run. But in terms of flamenco, it is more apropriate to understand C# as tonic, and this is just chord vii in the chord scale sequence. Modes are all about context, not fingerings. An alternate view would be if you use this run over a Bminor blues, the E#/Fnatural can be thought of as the flat 5 or the "blues note". But considering context, I know this run is meant to be C# spanish Phrygian.

I watched the vid (awesome!) and got more options after (as YouTube will do).
There's one called "Antonio Rey haciendo anguns picados de Paco de Lucia" (or something like that).

You can see the weight he puts on the 6th string with his thumb when doing picado. Very interesting. Suffice to say, string tension is probably a factor in that, but he's obviously able to generate a lot of power w/ out sacrificing speed and clarity. Maestro!
