Cante is Flamenco, and Flamenco is Cante. it's like steak and cheese, Onions on your hotdog, Tinto with Fanta Limon.

RE: The Cante accompaniment challeng... (in reply to henrym3483

Cante actually comes from the german word Kante and means "edge". "Tischkante" would be the edge of a table. Gitanos, as we know, like to sit around the edges of a table ( ) and sing. So they wanted to give this activity a shorter name. They wanted to make it more international, hence a "c" instead of "k", cante...

My last comment was more meant in the context of this thread, but i do think that the note-for-note playing of a falseta is easier to judge than an accompainment. I could think of many good ways of accompaining that ive heard, but with a PDL falseta, or any other, the space would be smaller. Its more pre-defined how you (should) play by what you play. Thats all imo of course...

Jason, i know that there are guys that are only interested in solo and dont want to do with cante, but seriously im not one of them... if its neccessary for solo to know cante i dont know. Some guitarrists like to stick more to the cante in their solo playing and some less or none.

If one is interestested in FLAMENCO, they WILL learn to accompany.

The word cante comes from the latin.... "canto" - to sing.

RE: The Cante accompaniment challeng... (in reply to JasonMcGuire

Jason,

In Scotland in the 50's there would be street beggars (mainly people who had met misfortune due to alcoholism and marital breakups etc) who would come round and sing popular ballads in the back-courts of tenament buildings for a few pennies flung out of the window.

You needed a strong, operatic voice to carry in the open air... actually, some of these guys were really good!

They were known as "chanters".

Also the melody pipe of the bagpipes is known as "the chanter", as opposed to the drone pipes.

So the word has carried across many languages and cultures.

However, Deniz's theory is very imaginitive, in that Flamenco and Gitanos lived very much on the "edge" of society...

cheers,

Ron

PS: The "JM" Latin-English Dictionary....

Man, this guy really gets around!

If I participate, I will most probably put the cante on the stereo and play along, recording it with my crappy usbstereo microphone where one channel doesnt work.... (Its not a joke)

I have an old Soundforge program, and I dont think it gives me the choice of importing one channel and playing along side on another and I havent got the energy to find and try a new program.

Unfortunately I'm still recuperating from shoulder-surgery, so I'm out as a contestant. However I'd be willing to serve as judge

I don't know if I can do any sort of justice to this competition. I'm working hard on the intermediate challenge. It's the same palo but the challenges are demanding in different ways and I need to work a lot on both!

RE: The Cante accompaniment challeng... (in reply to henrym3483

I am proposing a short extenshion on the deadline because we gonna be running too close to the intermediate challenge deadline and the two challenges gonna be stealing eacohothers thunder and its gonna get messy and confusing...but really and mostly cause i am so so behind and havent done anything on it

what do you guys think ? i mean really...is anyone gonna die if we make the deadline on the 7th instead of the 30th ? is it gonna be the end of the world ? so well be one week later BIG DEAL..how dare you complain..there's people starving in africa

so what do you say ? cmon dont be selfish... you have a voice...dont abuse democracy...do the right thing..should the deadline be on the 7th of the next month or the 30th of this month ?

may god give you an errection at the most inapropiate times if you disagree with me..like at a public swimming pool or a function where you have to make a speach..or at a job interview

Fortunately for me I am able to keep any arousal well hidden.

I am still able to be your admin on 7th so that's fine by me if you want to change.

Intermediate challenge deadline is now 26th though, so don't leave it too late.

Oh God..I don't know which is worse....getting one at an inappropriate time, or NOT getting one at an appropriate time?

(The true horn of Dilemma! )

cheers,

i was going to record today, actually i still am, so it really doesn't matter to me...whatever you guys agree on...
the problem is i was grating cheese yesterday - what a mistake! - see the picture with the end result...a fairly large part is now missing from my thumbnail, so it'll be interesting how it sounds...unfortunately today is the only day i have access to some decent recording equipment so i really have no choice but to do it today...

I think we should prospone to spring 2010 and then maybe prospone it a little more. Then maybe Flo will have the time to learn a falseta or two, and the intermediate, the beginners, the not so much beginners, the semiadvanced and maybe the subpros challenges can be finished without overlapping each other.

Just one more note. This challenge has already been prosponed once

To be serious. I clearly vote NO to a new deadline.

None of the reasons are acceptable. The Intermediate challenge has a deadline end october and if you guys havent made up how to record or what to play, I will just say that you´ve had 3 - 4 month.

DEADLINE IS 30 SEPTEMBER

This way we interfere less with the intermediate challenge.
