Is it a good idea to record yourself?

Seems like every time I try to record my playing it sounds @#$%^ AWFULL! I think I have a particular piece, or phrase, down pretty well. That is until I try to record it using my computer's Windows Sound Recorder. Then I hear all kinds of flaws, flubbed notes, missed notes, terrible tone, plus lots of inconsistencies. Somehow it seems the recording process tends to bring out the worst in my playing. So I dont try it very often. For some reason I seem to get nervous in front of the microphone, and usually screw up stuff that I think I know fairly well? Now I'm wondering if maybe I should try recording myself more often, maybe using a better system that the Windows Sound Recorder. (Any recommendations here?) I have some old amateur tape recordings of myself playing live in folk clubs about 40 years ago that don't sound too bad. Either I've gone downhill really fast, or I'm having trouble recording myself, or maybe both? Which leads to my question: "Is it a good idea to record yourself?" Any thoughts anybody. . .
