britguy -> Is it a good idea to record yourself? (Nov. 3 2011 19:52:10)

Seems like every time I try to record my playing it sounds @#$%^ AWFULL!

I think I have a particular piece, or phrase, down pretty well. That is until I try to record it using my computer's Windows Sound Recorder. Then I hear all kinds of flaws, flubbed notes, missed notes, terrible tone, plus lots of inconsistencies. Somehow it seems the recording process tends to bring out the worst in my playing. So I dont try it very often. For some reason I seem to get nervous in front of the microphone, and usually screw up stuff that I think I know fairly well?

Now I'm wondering if maybe I should try recording myself more often, maybe using a better system that the Windows Sound Recorder. (Any recommendations here?)

I have some old amateur tape recordings of myself playing live in folk clubs about 40 years ago that don't sound too bad. Either I've gone downhill really fast, or I'm having trouble recording myself, or maybe both?

Which leads to my question: "Is it a good idea to record yourself?"

Any thoughts anybody. . .

it's a must!
it's one thing what you hear or would like to hear in your head and it's a completely different thing when you listen from the outside...
i always recommend to everyone to record themselves periodically...the microphone nervousness eventually goes away too, just do it often enough!

it's just a matter of patience. in the beginning it was kind of painful to hear my self back, because I worked so hard on something. But after a while you will be surprised about your own evolution.
I think it's good to listen to your self when you are bad, because when you listen to yourself when you are better, you will know you got better and that will motivate you to get even better, because you know it's possible. you ve heard it with your own ears.

I don't know if it's a MUST to record and listen to yourself. I don't think so. Unless for example when you are not feeling too comfortable with a falsetta or so, and you know you play it in compas etc. but still something is bothering you, you can then record it and see what flavor is missing.
It might be a waste of time recording and listening to yourself all the time, instead of practicing COMPAS for example (with METRONOME).

Seriously practice compas, even though you think you know it. Don't practice falsettas dont practice religion, practice compas.

cheers

Once you record yourself alot regularly, you can start to hear yourself more
objectively when you're practicing.

Recording will show you your bad habits, so you can deal with them head on.

I told my teacher the other day, that I had recorded myself and sounded like crap. he said we are our own worst critics. Then he said save the recording continue to practice record yourself again and compare the recordings and you will be surprised.

yes it is a good idea
I try to record my self very often and post here on the foro, this allows me to spot my mistakes and know my weak points ... this process will eventually make you confident about your playing as well I guess

i can totally relate.

i would recommend slowing down your playing to a level where you can play it perfectly and easily. dont move up until you can achieve that. perfect AND easy.

once you can do that, you'll be able to hear perfection in real time, although at a slow pace. then just bump up the speed a bit and again, achieve perfection and ease. repeat this process. your ear will develop and you will be able to spot mistakes in real time, at a faster pace.

also, not practicing with a metronome is suicide.

as for sound recording, just use whatever will give you a clean, clear recording. you dont need anything fancy.

good luck and keep at it!

It is a good thing when you notice things that you can't stand in your playing, because it means you can fix it potentially. some people record and upload to youtube for the world to see and think they are amazing.
