It's not a cabbage, it's a lettuce, haven't you been watching the livestream? Keep up!

ok, so they might be replacing the lettuce with that crappy cabbage we had before, but still, detail man, detail!

Well I was trying to get out in front of it. Cabbages can last longer than lettuce.

RE: I Demand A New Cabbage ( Anglow ... (in reply to estebanana

I just read that Liz Truss will get a pension of something like $130,000 a year for her stint. In light of this, I am willing to offer my services for a couple of months. I’ll clean up the mess and do other things, too, big things. I’d rather not say exactly what until after I get the job. But it’ll be something. Trust me.

Ok, I’ll give a hint…for starters, I was thinking we could tow England across the Atlantic and dock it outside Newfoundland until we have a chance to sort out what to do with the place. I checked Google maps and it looks like it’d be a pretty good fit. If the neighbours complain, we could possibly cram it into Hudson’s Bay, but that could be a bit of a logistical nightmare. Better to stick with the original plan.

The important thing is, I need to be appointed leader. I can’t see any other way around it.

Just an aside for the Nervous Nellies amongst us: I promise that after my pension is secured I’ll get the h*ll out of the way and the Isle can tow itself anywhere it wants. The original plan was never anything more than a temporary measure, anyways. I haven’t even run the idea past Newfoundland yet…but I will if it gets legs…

And before you guys in France get all huffy with me, my ancestors were from Normandy. How do you think I can cook up all these great ideas seemingly without effort? It’s because I’m a reasonable man, like Voltaire and what’s his name, Rabelais. And you Yanks be careful, too, I’m not *that* reasonable. Just bear that in mind before you start telling me what I’m allowed to do or whatnot.

Dear Chester,

How was that for unhinged?

Dear Stephen,

That was a generalized rant not directed at you personally, of course. Lettuce hope it was germane to the topic, however.

Wow, Rob, you have an ambitious agenda. And Stephen, it is a good thing you have posted "trigger warnings" on your latest posts. "Anglow warning" and "Anglophone content warning" indeed. There are enough "micro-aggressions" in these posts to fill a Sociology professor's notebook.

Just look at the content regarding Liz Truss's meltdown in the UK. And the reference to lettuce. We already have a post in French on another thread as a protest against Anglo-American content on the Foro. What next? With this latest venture do not be surprised if a disgruntled member writes a screed in Burmese using the liturgical script of Pali to show us that there is more to the world than the UK and the US. That will certainly put us in our place. Yes indeed.

With "trigger warnings" about "micro-aggressions," perhaps we need another category on the Foro. Call it "Safe Space." Under the category of "Safe Space," those who are intimidated by such as this thread will have a comfortable place to which they can retreat, while discussing the relative merits of Sino-Tibetan, of which Burmese is a member, and Indo-European and French. Meanwhile, the rest of us can babble on in English over inconsequential topics like British and American politics, and the price of lettuce.

Oh man…I would have brought Burma into the fray but I checked the map and it’s not even an island and is therefore not tow-able. Otherwise, I probably would have tried to figure out a way to shoe-horn it in somehow. Hopefully no-one from Burma is offended, unlike everyone else I mentioned, who might have good reason, I suppose.

But, to be clear, I really am only in it for the money. That’s the take-away, the big pole in the tent, as they like to say in powerful circles…

Ribs, I mean Rob,

I like how you are thinking here, but I’ve also got an England Foreign Study Program:

Since England and Alabama are pretty much the same size, let’s airlift Alabama to the English Channel and bring England over to fit in the hole left by Alabama. Leave them there for a year so they can both learn about other societies and cultures.

The Fish & Chips and the Gulf Shrimp swap. It’s a good learning experience for both.

When I was a lad we used to steal dirty magazines from various adults in our proximity and take them back to the ‘fort’ to examine them. In Penthouse magazine there was a monthly cartoon called ‘Chester the Molester’ - whenever our Chester says something I just imagine it’s that old cartoon come to life. 😂

Brocolli and brussel sprouts have no business on anyone's dinner plate, as they rate lower than cabbage. Neither do they offer a fair comparison with US presidents and British prime ministers.

A provocative post. And one which called for a google search - which yielded this:

"Famous sprout fans include former Prime Minister Gordon Brown and TV presenter Esther Rantzen, who attempted to break the world record for eating the most sprouts – but only managed five".

So there you have it. The man who saved the world thinks rather highly of them. Esther Rantzen who won't be familiar to those over the pond but is well known in the UK on the strength of her 80s TV program "That's Life", also seems to like them...up to a point.

See here my good man, let’s not bring Brussels into this discussion as Nigel Barrage or Farrage or whatever his name is loathes Brussels.

We shan’t put any Tories in a position to feel poorly now shall we?

You've probably had them overcooked. Cooked al dente, bit of black pepper on top, one of best things about the otherwise bland trad Xmas dinner in UK. Pretty good in a bhaji too as Xmas special from our local curry house. The foulest thing is of course parsnip.

Unlike Russia under Vladimir Putin, who has actually justified the invasion of Ukraine as freeing the Ukrainians from their "Nazi" government.

Or China under Xi Jinping, who has honored the agreement to maintain Hong Kong as a Special Administrative Region with its separate system by crushing all dissent and imposing Beijing's direct rule through vetting of the Chief Executive. As a result, Taiwan very much appreciates America's support in maintaining its freedom.

Oh be careful Dear Bill, treading on eggshells there with semi unhinged comments about the great peaceful and agreeable China. Why it was only yesterday I was speaking to a friend in Hong Kong about the just and even handed way China has meted out freedoms to Tibet, Uighur folks and how valiantly they upheld the autonomy agreement with the good region of Honk Kong.

And how unfair to Russia to slight her grand sense of empire and instead shame the land with the notion that Russia is a petrol station posing as a country.

All the great violinists of the 20th century came from Russia, they all moved to the west, because they simply wanted to spread the good love of life, music and the pursuit of freedom granted them by the USSR. Why even the famous cellist Rostropovich came to the US under no duress at all and played Shostakovich in the Carter White House. Yes and he stayed because he took the conductor position of the US National Symphony Orchestra located in our fine capital city Washington DC. He stepped up to the podium of the Kennedy Center Orchestra and it was not one but ironic that the greatest cellist of the 20th century didn’t conduct in Moscow.

The nine-year old article from the Guardian offers nothing new that has not been known all along. There have always been right-wing groups in Ukraine, just as there are right-wing groups in every country of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Bloc. That has nothing to do with Putin's excuse for invading Ukraine in order to, as he says, free Ukraine from it's "Nazi government." Putin has called the Zelensky government "Nazi," a laughable pretext and excuse to invade, particularly when one looks at Putin's government in Russia, which really is a Fascist operation ruled by one man.

As for John Mearsheimer's talk in 2015, he is trotting out the tired old argument that the West is at fault for Russia's incursion in Ukraine because, in Russia's view, the West has tried to pry Ukraine away from Russia and make it a part of the West. In fact, the West has done no such thing. Back in 2014-15, when your cited Guardian article and Mearsheimer's talk at the University of Chicago occurred, the European Union stated clearly that Ukraine did not meet the requirements for membership in the EU. And NATO has never considered Ukraine for membership, either in 2014-15 or today.

It is Ukraine that has indicated it wants to become a member of the EU and NATO, and given the Russian invasion of Ukraine, one can see why.

Bill

RE: I Demand A New Cabbage ( Anglow ... (in reply to estebanana

Oh Lordy, during the Olympics when Russia was massing troops on the border with Ukraine all these whack a doodle guys with the West has been cruel to Russia lectures popped up on YouTube. It’s a bunch of historical hogwash.

When Russia invaded and annexed the Crimea in 2014 incited Germany taking the Sudetenland prior to the brunt of WWII. It’s motivated by Putin’s backing on Russian nationalism and his desire, which is well documented, of wanting to reassemble the former Soviet states into a new pan Russian empire. Russia should never have been in Berlin after WWII and it’s Putin’s own twisted sense of bereavement that his career as a KGB officer was cut short as Berlin station officer. Putin is a little Hitler clone ( like the Elvis Costello song 😂) and his historical position as a Russian nationalist has been locked into the mythology of Russian empire by none other than Patriarch Kiril the head of the Russian Orthodox Church.

These guys with their ‘the west is a threat to Russia’ are laughable. Remember when Russia stirred up trouble in Chechnya? When they bombed the cities in the same gross way that the did in Syria? Remember how Putin gladly enlisted the backing of Patriarch Kiril to put down the performance actions of Russian kids calling for democracy in 2010-11 ( similar to kids in Iran now ) the patriarch whipped up the nationalist/ religious fervor of people who lived outside the more international cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Remember the disgusting things they did and said about the ‘Pussy Riot’ political protests?

Russias a great place, it’s just got bad management. If anything the late 1990’s push to include China and Russia more into the established western economies was taken advantage of by these two countries when they began to act in more authoritarian ways, even though the hope and expectations were for China and Russia to settle into more open societies.

Russia I still wouldn’t write off because it’s in proximity to Europe and there is a part of Russia that’s integrated philosophical with Europe. They just to get rid of Putin and have the opposition leaders run in elections. The ones Putin’s police forces poisoned. The number of important journalists Putin has assassinated is frightening, I can provide list for those who have not followed the gruesome trail.

China on the other hand is out of control. The CCP seems bent on empire building at just the point in history when we could all be in agreement that the age of empire is over and giving back some autonomy to our prior cultural and land acquisitions might not be a bad step into the future. But then China feels that it didn’t get its slice of the cake in the 19th century so it’s making up for it now.

So yeah, that idea that the west caused the contemporary friction between Russia and Ukraine is garbage. That’s as garbage as the idea brought up by people who claim North Korea has been forced into a defensive position because they are scared of the west. But that’s another story.

To suggest that one person, in this case Victoria Nuland, is responsible for Ukraine's travails and Putin's decision to invade is preposterous. It would be laughable were it not for Putin's war against Ukraine rendering such nonsense unfunny indeed.

I'm sure that Victoria Nuland would be surprised to learn that neither Ukrainians nor Russians had any agency themselves, and that she was the puppeteer manipulating each in their decisions and actions.

That article is garbage
No offense to anyone with an anonymous profile registration, but a lot of us here actually know each other in person, or by who we really are. We do business with each other with real identities and we’re friends off line and on line. A lot of users with anon profiles are difficult to take seriously because they offer no context as to where they are from and how they process historical events.

Anon profiles are fine, but it’s like if you actually know the person you’re talking to it’s more likely the conversation will have honesty. This link is to an article that’s a hodge podge of disinformation. Propaganda maybe too strong a word, but the information is demonstrably counter factual and cherry picked.
