I just read that Liz Truss will get a pension of something like $130,000 a year for her stint. In light of this, I am willing to offer my services for a couple of months. I’ll clean up the mess and do other things, too, big things. I’d rather not say exactly what until after I get the job. But it’ll be something. Trust me. Ok, I’ll give a hint…for starters, I was thinking we could tow England across the Atlantic and dock it outside Newfoundland until we have a chance to sort out what to do with the place. I checked Google maps and it looks like it’d be a pretty good fit. If the neighbours complain, we could possibly cram it into Hudson’s Bay, but that could be a bit of a logistical nightmare. Better to stick with the original plan. The important thing is, I need to be appointed leader. I can’t see any other way around it. Just an aside for the Nervous Nellies amongst us: I promise that after my pension is secured I’ll get the h*ll out of the way and the Isle can tow itself anywhere it wants. The original plan was never anything more than a temporary measure, anyways. I haven’t even run the idea past Newfoundland yet…but I will if it gets legs… And before you guys in France get all huffy with me, my ancestors were from Normandy. How do you think I can cook up all these great ideas seemingly without effort? It’s because I’m a reasonable man, like Voltaire and what’s his name, Rabelais. And you Yanks be careful, too, I’m not *that* reasonable. Just bear that in mind before you start telling me what I’m allowed to do or whatnot.

Wow, Rob, you have an ambitious agenda. And Stephen, it is a good thing you have posted "trigger warnings" on your latest posts. "Anglow warning" and "Anglophone content warning" indeed. There are enough "micro-aggressions" in these posts to fill a Sociology professor's notebook. Just look at the content regarding Liz Truss's meltdown in the UK. And the reference to lettuce. We already have a post in French on another thread as a protest against Anglo-American content on the Foro. What next? With this latest venture do not be surprised if a disgruntled member writes a screed in Burmese using the liturgical script of Pali to show us that there is more to the world than the UK and the US. That will certainly put us in our place. Yes indeed. With "trigger warnings" about "micro-aggressions," perhaps we need another category on the Foro. Call it "Safe Space." Under the category of "Safe Space," those who are intimidated by such as this thread will have a comfortable place to which they can retreat, while discussing the relative merits of Sino-Tibetan, of which Burmese is a member, and Indo-European and French. Meanwhile, the rest of us can babble on in English over inconsequential topics like British and American politics, and the price of lettuce. Bill

The nine-year old article from the Guardian offers nothing new that has not been known all along. There have always been right-wing groups in Ukraine, just as there are right-wing groups in every country of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Bloc. That has nothing to do with Putin's excuse for invading Ukraine in order to, as he says, free Ukraine from it's "Nazi government." Putin has called the Zelensky government "Nazi," a laughable pretext and excuse to invade, particularly when one looks at Putin's government in Russia, which really is a Fascist operation ruled by one man. As for John Mearsheimer's talk in 2015, he is trotting out the tired old argument that the West is at fault for Russia's incursion in Ukraine because, in Russia's view, the West has tried to pry Ukraine away from Russia and make it a part of the West. In fact, the West has done no such thing. Back in 2014-15, when your cited Guardian article and Mearsheimer's talk at the University of Chicago occurred, the European Union stated clearly that Ukraine did not meet the requirements for membership in the EU. And NATO has never considered Ukraine for membership, either in 2014-15 or today. It is Ukraine that has indicated it wants to become a member of the EU and NATO, and given the Russian invasion of Ukraine, one can see why. Bill
