I was Just stirring to be honest. Ramzi tried to help out but no one was biting. In the old days, starting a thread like this would have caused a real fuss.

There is plenty of "jazzy" stuff i like and quite a bit that I don't personally get overly excited about. I guess it's only a problem when guitarists feel pressured to put fancy "jazzy"scales in, in order to be accepted as part of the cool group. A nice composition with great rhythm and expressive feeling is what i like. Jazzy or not.

I think now if you want to stir things up, you need to add another layer to the "jazz/old school" thing.
Try bringing up a crowdfunding project on something jazzy, that should do the trick.

Oh no wait, I got it: ask for free tabs for a jazzmenco piece that was recorded thanks to a crowdfunding project. If that doesn't do it, I don't know what will!

Truth is a lot of the old guard is gone and the new folks are quite assimilated to the Internet chat format. Hard to believe it was only some years ago a post would cause tantrums and death threats etc. Sort of a double edge sword these days, we miss the traffic and activity yet it's so much more tranquil.

No Scale in particular. I was thinking along the lines of a guy I came across who had started learning flamenco online by learning a scale used by Antonio Rey. Just the scale mind you. Long form fingering type thing. I thought it was odd.
I showed him some simple strumming for tangos but it wasn't what he was after.

He seemed to find traditional stuff boring or not cool enough.

Some guitarists skip a lot of steps by jumping straight to the latest material. When listening to an older guitarist like Rafael Trenas for example, provides a better solid base to work from IMO.

BTW, I pinched a few falsetas from your alegrias in e minor that you played on Richards Arcangel. Really nice playing and composition that one! Is it yours?

I've seen that mainly with guitarists who are interested in solo guitar and nothing else. They end up with their own compositions that are in compas but somehow completely out of the "logic" of whatever palos they're playing in. To be honest, I was kind of like that at a time (still am sometimes). And then I started accompanying cante. That was the game changer for me.

The Tomatito recording notwithstanding, my original point was in response to a post that opined that Benson was a scrub, which IMO is absurd. The guy is a monster. The relation to flamenco is the interest that many flamencos have with the playing of people like Benson and Metheny. The musicianship required to do what Benson does exceeds that required by flamenco players in some areas IMO. So, I don't understand dissing Benson on a flamenco forum.

Kenny G. -I really don't know how accomplished he is since I don't listen to that kind of music. I wouldn't be surprised if he's good. After all, there is music and there is business. Assuming he's a capable jazz player, do you really think he'd rather be doing 50.00 gigs at a coffee house? The mention of him reminds me of a story about I believe, Michael Brecker. He was doing a session and they asked him to play like Clarence Clemons. Brecker reportedly asked the engineer to turn down the lights in the studio to set the mood, then asked them to turn them down more. Once the studio was dark, he put his sax in the case and walked out. But I read that Brecker played on Born to run, so maybe the story is not true.....

Nor do I. Wasn't trying to diss him as a player at all. Can't say I've ever really listened to him. Was just noticing that no one came to his defense

I joke about his "world record" just because I've always found that kind of thing ridiculous. Somewhere out there there's a drummer with a world record of fastest single-pedal bass hits per minute, etc. etc. I guess this stuff falls in the "business" category you mentioned. He's certainly done well for himself.

Hey Mark, Benson is a legend. what I meant was that I don't hear "Jazz" in modern flamenco. You know... the usual 'modern flamenco is too jazzy' argument.
