Real men don't fell trees with chainsaws. They rip them out of the ground bare handed and use them as toothpicks. (you know, coz they've been chewing bees) [:D]

Really enjoyed that George Benson clip Mark. He makes it sound sooooo easy.

Someway or another this discussion is headed back to flamenco artists and dental care. Why all the gold teeth...

I was Just stirring to be honest. Ramzi tried to help out but no one was biting. In the old days, starting a thread like this would have caused a real fuss.[:D]

There is plenty of "jazzy" stuff i like and quite a bit that I don't personally get overly excited about. I guess it's only a problem when guitarists feel pressured to put fancy "jazzy"scales in, in order to be accepted as part of the cool group. A nice composition with great rhythm and expressive feeling is what i like. Jazzy or not.

I'm innocent, I tell ya! [:D]

Piwin -> RE: Real Men (Sep. 1 2016 11:44:38)

I think now if you want to stir things up, you need to add another layer to the "jazz/old school" thing.
Try bringing up a crowdfunding project on something jazzy, that should do the trick. [;)]
Oh no wait, I got it: ask for free tabs for a jazzmenco piece that was recorded thanks to a crowdfunding project. If that doesn't do it, I don't know what will! [:D]

A scale such as??

Truth is a lot of the old guard is gone and the new folks are quite assimilated to the Internet chat format. Hard to believe it was only some years ago a post would cause tantrums and death threats etc. Sort of a double edge sword these days, we miss the traffic and activity yet it's so much more tranquil.

Ha ha your initial response was a classic. You opened as many cans of worms as possible.

Piwin,

Ha ha yeah mate, I should have gone for the jazzmenco crowd funding.

Ricardo,

No Scale in particular. I was thinking along the lines of a guy I came across who had started learning flamenco online by learning a scale used by Antonio Rey. Just the scale mind you. Long form fingering type thing. I thought it was odd.
I showed him some simple strumming for tangos but it wasn't what he was after.[:D] He seemed to find traditional stuff boring or not cool enough.

Some guitarists skip a lot of steps by jumping straight to the latest material. When listening to an older guitarist like Rafael Trenas for example, provides a better solid base to work from IMO.

BTW, I pinched a few falsetas from your alegrias in e minor that you played on Richards Arcangel. Really nice playing and composition that one! Is it yours?

I've seen that mainly with guitarists who are interested in solo guitar and nothing else. They end up with their own compositions that are in compas but somehow completely out of the "logic" of whatever palos they're playing in. To be honest, I was kind of like that at a time (still am sometimes). And then I started accompanying cante. That was the game changer for me.

Arash -> RE: Real Men (Sep. 2 2016 10:49:53)

This is how real men play guitar.

Yep my stuff...although the inspiration for it should be obvious. That way of doing Alegrias has fallen out of fashion it seems.

Morante -> RE: Real Men (Sep. 2 2016 15:46:36)

Real men sing. Those who can´t sing play guitar. Those who can´t play guitar play palmas. Those who can´t play and have no taste play cajon and bass.[;)]

Piwin -> RE: Real Men (Sep. 2 2016 16:16:12)

Lol. I bet that guy doesn't get a lot people criticizing his music. At least not up close. [8D]

@Morante.

You forgot to add male dancers at the end of your list. [;)]

There are no dancers on the list.

WWWWOOOOOOOaaa where did you find that video ,,,Arash ......??
you know the guitar isnt actually plugged in ,, its just sheer force that makes it sound like that ..
at the end he should just eat that guitar to freak out any luthiers .. by the way , his legs ( not shown ) are really kind of reptilian ad- ons ...
just in case he reads this , hes a nice guy , and his mother grows flowers ...

How many bees has he chewed?/

George Benson likes to play with Pulgar. That's about the only thing him and flamenco have in common.

Well I'll be a whore bellied bastard. I guess I missed that one or forgot about it years ago. I second that D'OH

Mark2 -> RE: Real Men (Sep. 20 2016 16:11:44)

The Tomatito recording notwithstanding, my original point was in response to a post that opined that Benson was a scrub, which IMO is absurd. The guy is a monster. The relation to flamenco is the interest that many flamencos have with the playing of people like Benson and Metheny. The musicianship required to do what Benson does exceeds that required by flamenco players in some areas IMO. So, I don't understand dissing Benson on a flamenco forum.

I notice nobody's coming to the defense of Kenny G, who was also dissed.
I mean come on guys. He holds the world record for the longest single note on a saxophone. 45 minutes of E flat.
All of that proves, that whether you like his music or not, Kenny G knows how to blow.

badum ts.

ok ok...I'm leaving now...

Kenny G rocks.

Piwin -> RE: Real Men (Sep. 20 2016 19:03:25)

It's the hair isn't it?

To be honest, all that comes to mind when I hear his name is The Bodyguard and..well..basically anything of 80's pop culture. [:)]

Mark2 -> RE: Real Men (Sep. 20 2016 19:29:29)

Kenny G. -I really don't know how accomplished he is since I don't listen to that kind of music. I wouldn't be surprised if he's good. After all, there is music and there is business. Assuming he's a capable jazz player, do you really think he'd rather be doing 50.00 gigs at a coffee house? The mention of him reminds me of a story about I believe, Michael Brecker. He was doing a session and they asked him to play like Clarence Clemons. Brecker reportedly asked the engineer to turn down the lights in the studio to set the mood, then asked them to turn them down more. Once the studio was dark, he put his sax in the case and walked out. But I read that Brecker played on Born to run, so maybe the story is not true.....

Piwin -> RE: Real Men (Sep. 20 2016 20:20:24)

Nor do I. Wasn't trying to diss him as a player at all. Can't say I've ever really listened to him. Was just noticing that no one came to his defense [:)]
I joke about his "world record" just because I've always found that kind of thing ridiculous. Somewhere out there there's a drummer with a world record of fastest single-pedal bass hits per minute, etc. etc. I guess this stuff falls in the "business" category you mentioned. He's certainly done well for himself.

JasonM -> RE: Real Men (Sep. 21 2016 0:01:25)

Hey Mark, Benson is a legend. what I meant was that I don't hear "Jazz" in modern flamenco. You know... the usual 'modern flamenco is too jazzy' argument.
