He is indeed playing 12-beat phrases, but at times when I was being thrown off thinking he was off compas, it was because he would start the phrase at one tempo & then change to a much faster tempo extremely quickly to the point that it created the illusion of missing beats rather than just stretching out or stacking up the beats / compas...
