I find this crazy and awesome, how do you find it? :D

tri7/5 -> RE: Raul El Perla solea (Jul. 28 2014 0:54:21)

While technically impressive, I personally like my soleas to breathe a bit more.

Leñador -> RE: Raul El Perla solea (Jul. 28 2014 2:53:58)

Nice, I like it. There's some areas where solea is played that fast. Old school cante is pretty fast. Check Thomas Pavons solea on YouTube. I can dig it.

On Steroids.

El Kiko -> RE: Raul El Perla solea (Jul. 28 2014 10:30:06)

yeah ive heard some pretty fast soleas ,, that one would be about 160bpm maybe as oppose to 90 ish that they usually are ... thing is though if you are playing solo you can do pretty much anything you feel is best as you dont have to fit in with anyone ....so like solea at bulerias speed .....
I suppose his Bulerias would be yup to 300 bpm maybe ...[:-]

Here he is playing por solea at a slower tempo with more rubato.

Is he going out of compas often in this video? I thought so, but then I looked at his FB page & saw him on stage with PdL which started me doubting myself, but damn it sounds like he's cutting beats here & there! [:D]

kikkoman -> RE: Raul El Perla solea (Jul. 28 2014 17:46:44)

is it just me or does this video seem like its been sped up? it seems very jerky

Mark2 -> RE: Raul El Perla solea (Jul. 28 2014 21:46:27)

The stuff and tempo in the first vid is perfect for a solea escobilla.

I find it awesome and a little crazy!!

OK first viewing I really got into it but the next couple of views I found myself being critical about how rushed it felt.
Don't know at moment.

No. As per usual, no metronome throws people off...and I ain't making another palmas video. [:D]

I just re-listened & counted. Indeed, he is following the compas. However, he is abusing the elasticity of solea. In my mind, you can use rubato but to do that effectively, you have to prepare the listener for the elastic changes. It's like driving & getting to a stop sign: you don't slam on the breaks 1 foot before the line & throw the passenger through the windshield, but rather you slowly ease into the complete halt, and that is much better received. He is indeed playing 12-beat phrases, but at times when I was being thrown off thinking he was off compas, it was because he would start the phrase at one tempo & then change to a much faster tempo extremely quickly to the point that it created the illusion of missing beats rather than just stretching out or stacking up the beats / compas...

Cheers!

You can find more (younger) footage of him throughout Tao Ruspoli's 10 part series - highly recommended watching:

I thought that was him!

jimand -> RE: Raul El Perla solea (Jul. 29 2014 6:47:41)

I met Perla when he was touring with Farruquito, maybe 10 years ago.

jimand -> RE: Raul El Perla solea (Jul. 29 2014 7:22:01)

I recently saw a few videos of Perla playing guitars for sale on the Barcelona shop youtube channel.

He sometimes plays second guitar with Roman Vicenti accompanying Farruquito. Sometimes is accompanist for Jose Maya, Vicente Soto.

At the moment he plays often at Tablao Carmen Amaya in Barcelona.

There are a few more short guitar demo videos on Solera's youtube chanel.
