I bloody love building (trying to build) guitars!!....today!
This isn't the deepest insight and pros may scoff at my 'noviceness'... but just being back in the worskhop is such a nice feeling...smelling the wood, cedar shavings...(the taste of the cedar dust not so much)
sat at work and I'm itching to get home and carry on!
Honestly will post some pictures soon!...if anyones even reading
I making the heel block by stacking the cedar this time. trying to resquare the glued block.
why would my planes cut smooth for all passes and then suddenly tear out?
Perhaos the grain changed just enough, try flipping the plane around and going the other way?
After a crazy buisy summer I spent an hour attacking the dust lined clutter of my guitar work bench. Its a start, perhaps a ritual, should i burn some sage, i dont have any cedar shavings, ring a bell six times, and clap one compas?
And whats wrong with you? Photos or it didnt happen ;)

Ok, couldnt get a photo to upload… :/

I couldnt get the before and after ohoto of my work bench to load the other day… Sawing up some first stage leaf logs today and was hoping to share my progress.
Think ill toddle over to racardo’s phyr-minco thread and toant him like a Frenchmen to the king of the brittens…

Anyone having troubke with picture uploads? Getting errors
Yes. That's why I just provided a link to mine. I tried resizing by posting pictures on Facebook and then downloading them. And by emailing them to myself. Neither worked singly nor in tandem.

ON THE OTHER HAND!
Stu, mind if i pile on, seems like we are all here anyway ;)
So last year i found this cool looking 10” chraftsmen table top band saw in a pile of junk in an aircraft outbuilding, I asked the owner if i could fix it up and it could be handy in the hangar. Unfortunatky its hardly better then a toy and struggled to make its way through 1/4” , thats 7mm to you over there ;), a little closer examantion and it seems the rubber wheel liners were missing, fixef that up and now it still mostly a toy but now it will cut that 1/4” trasonanly well… with pationce. And yeah, that babdsaw made its way to my home workbench faster then you could say lutheri three times backwords.
Now I had made up some first leaf marketry rosette logs for my “Fan” tiles…
Ok, point of honisty here, to Rob F in particular, who first called them “Fans” cause for the life of me they were an abstract form i created, perhaps i was channeling a flamenca goddes… anyway there you have it, a tip of the fan Rob for seeing what i was too blind to see. ¡Olé!
Back to the bandsaw, about this time i contracted pnumonia, it was spring the following winter it came back and by next spring it was only mostly dead. This summer it tried again but we/I have learned a few things so just a couple weeks of lung cookies.
So here it is almost mid October, my lung health in my hands and that damn bandsaw hogging up a third of my little workbench all these months, mocking me actully, the fence set with an untried gap of 2mm+ , and i have the perfect dust controll plan. Im going to slip a larg black garbage bag over it, tightly wrap the open end around the vacuum hose and power cord, my vacuum is outside and plumed into workspace. So far so good… im going to cut and tape around the top of the bandsaw table about 8” squair. Easy Peesy. Its a nasty wet rainy day, gusting about 40Kts, petfetc day to work inside.
Right :/ I wrap the bag around the hose and cord with a thin elastic cord and then watch my garbage bag not slowly inflate. I would post a photo but im too busy being gored as it were by the damn wind!
WTF! Sory but i dont know the metric equevalant of WTF?
So its sunday now, the shops all closed, i need a one way flapper common to sewer systems, and the first one to make a tastless joke about it ill curse with 13 years of arctic weather, guitar riveing dryness, and what the hell one moose.
There you have it…

Yes! Happy to see you back at it!
I need some inspiration to build another. I’ve got most of the wood lying around. The thought of doing a mosaic rosette sticker always stops me, and routing bindings!

curious. this is one of the parts i like the most! I actually alreayd made the rosette fo rthi sguitar before starting the actual guitar build... was something i could do at my kitchen table....
but yeah routing bindings channels, im not looking forward to....that and fingerboard and frets..(i dont like those things.)

Because my dust control unit is outside and the wind was rocking just right there was negative pressure inside my cabin, so I couldn’t open the bag my little toy bandsaw was in because with the suction on the dust woukd blow all over my cabin. I’m off the grid solar/battery bank so I can’t leave the big vacuum on continually… The other day the bag was sucked tight around the saw and I should have got to it but the stars never aligned :/
I really enjoy making the various rosette bits, trying somthing different each time, and taking it to the edge! I figured out just a few years ago that I am a creative endorphin junky, so making rosettes feeds my fix! I’ve been working on marquetry fan tiles for a couple years now but not 100 % satisfied with the outcome. So far the boring brown ones have come out the best… go figure. I did a set of green with AYC yellow that had promise but I buggered up the log and missed a line of pixels so it looks rubbish :/ I did a blue next but once flooded with HHG it looked like Smerf blue LOFNL… So the logs I’m slicing up now are a more tame blue, I hope ;)
Just a few more weeks of my other endorphin fix, float plane flying, before ice up, but once I put my little butterfly away, I’ll be digging back in.

gotcha!
I also thought i disliked working with ebony (hence finger board anxiety) but last night i was working on a ebony neck reinforcement and planing the ebony was a pleasure! I have a reasonably new plane and ive sharpened it!!!
progress so far... 1. Neck scarf joint done 2. heel block made and squared off (i think) 3. sound board glued and cut to rough shape 4. back strip custom made to match rosette and binding /purfling colour plan. 5. back jointed and glued and cut to shape. with custom back strip. 6. rosewood headplate thicknessed and veneers cut to match colour scheme. 7. purflings made
I must say this is a much easier process this time rpund now that i have the tools and jigs at hand.. 1st time I was making jigs and buying tools as I went along.
Even nipping out to the workshop means I can get a little job done in a short time.
