RE: New Vicente album is out (in reply to xirdneH_imiJ

after listen to some tracks released i was hoping that it was something diferent . I was wrong , its just another record with some influences from previous records without inspiration.
no cante , thats a shame , all compositions are the old formula of some hits of the past
It sounded like a "rushed" record , like he had a deadline and didnt had inspiration and had to rush things.

I still love Vicente , this record will lost in time.
Hope for the next one

Sadly I have to agree, I don't like the album at all, it's full of recycled ideas. I'll of course give it another few chances and maybe it'll grow on me. Most people seem to like it so I'm in the minority in this case :)

Sounds like a cool new arp pattern vs his old standard rehash of Meeting of the spirits/cancion de amor arpegio (5+7). Without listening to the album yet, your version already convinced me there will be some good stuff on here (despite everybody saying they don’t like it ).

RE: New Vicente album is out (in reply to xirdneH_imiJ

The thing that bums me out about a lot of his albums is compositional bloat, particularly in the more pop stuff. He just repeats motifs at one point without substantive changes. I know it’s fairly common to repeat a motif immediately in a falseta and then do something else with it the third time around, but that’s not the same thing. This album actually sounds like he’s treating the repeated motif thing with more care, layering stuff as a minimalist might. Sometimes the harmonic ideas are not interesting enough to do that, though — pretty poorly masked 2-5-1 stuff.

BUT

Vicente is still one of the GOATs and this is a relatively nitpicky complaint, I’m already enjoying this record quite a bit.

No doubt he's one of the best ever. Still disappointing stuff, and meaningless key changes that hurt my ears. Technically some amazing stuff of course so there's plenty to study and enjoy still.

Personally, I like almost all the tracks from the new album! Vicente has always had and has a great imagination and an amazing feeling of playing!

Can’t believe I wasted $0.00 dollars on this album!

It might not be his most earth shattering work but I’ll still get some enjoyment out from this album. Soleá is very catchy, sorta the same flavor as the one on the last album. 2 bulerías can’t go wrong, it’s like saying I don’t like ice cream for god sake!! What’s wrong with you kids?

I’ve never been big fan of the orchestral string section overlay stuff - like the Gaurija de Lucia, Soy Gitano, Gerardo’ Algeria’s motif, It always reminds me of a 70’s movie sound track or somethin, but that’s just me. . But, I do always appreciate something more than just solo guitar these days. With no cante I’m sure this was the intended theme

EDIT: More I listen the more I’m enjoying

I tried to listen to the first track on my phone and thirty seconds in I’m like, dog no…

Later that day, I’m starting dinner and I decide to give it another try but this time through my nice little Yamaha stereo with a subwoofer. Much better, good cooking dinner music, would have been better with a glass of wine.

Gotta agree the orchestration was pretty cheesy, almost porn background bad but I wouldn’t know anything about that?

Still, I would rather listen ya this then 95% of all the current pop music out there.

Im not quite sure thats what he was saying?!?!

I felt the same with most of vicentes recent albums. first few listens....urgh... but they grow. and may not be the flamenco fix i need but they are usually pretty enjoyable and catchy

I was right about the hype. Usually hype leads to disappointment.

Just wanted to note that in my post above were mostly personal observations predicated on taste.

I think a single live violin would have been better than the canned orchestration, I did better using Garage Band twenty years ago.

To be fair I just discovered some old podcasts, 2022 I think, called El cante de Jerez with
Manuel Rodríguez. It’s in Spanish which I don’t really understand but the contrast between the raw often unaccompanied Cante and Vincent’s new album is extreme to say the least.

https://www.rtve.es/play/audios/el-cante-de-jerez/

The last thing I need to add is one really should give an album like this a few good listens before passing judgment: ya, guilty as charged ;)

Following your advice, I will permanently refrain from passing judgment.

Ha! the parts where the palmas are going with the orchestration are cool. Probably because it reminds me of Poeta. Kinda nostalgic

RE: New Vicente album is out (in reply to xirdneH_imiJ

This album took so long to come out that I am only listening to it right now for the first time.

First track sounded like an attempt at self plagiarizing at multiple levels all at once, it's as if he was dared to cram all of his discography into a single track.

The production sounds a bit weird. I am listening on Tidal, it says "Max|Flac" but it is sounding like an oldschool 128kbps mp3, limited bandwidth.. Guitar sounds kinda dry, which is good but I am not hearing that barky and ferocious tone that I associate with him, sounds a bit muted. Those crappy sampled intruments are absolute **** and very distracting.

I am now almost at the end of the album. Overall, this sounds like bedroom recording demo versions of all the ideas he eventually used across his career. Either that or there's something wrong with my audio.

Now on to My Dying Bride's new album which came out today and is actually what I opened Tidal for

Boas,

So he composed the Soleá and dedicated to his percussionist (cepillos’s cousin from Sanlucar), and titled it the same as my Soleá about the same exact plaza. It is a cool piece in the end.
