Flamenco Noob Introduction

Hello, there...

My name is Dule and I am from Serbia. I've been studying classical guitar for twelve years now and in two-three years I will finish the Academy for classical guitar. As all of the other guitarists, I've found flamenco to be very attractive with all the scales and fast fingering etc. That was, of course, when I thought that Paco de Lucia and Vicente Amigo r the whole flamenco! :D
Recently, i started playing in a flamenco band I, for the first time, I've heard some of the more traditional forms of playing it and saw that I know nothing about this art. Anyway, I want to learn it, step by step. I will probably have a loooooot of questions, but i guess this place is for that, wright? :D

My first two questions are: Can u give any advice for how to begin with it? And can u, please, tell me what music should I listen at the start so that I can learn, at least the basic forms through listening? I love tangos, but I don't know what is the good music for me to learn this form the best, so i can use it 100%.

Thank you, very much! :D

Welcome!

I'd begin by trying to learn the different palos (i.e. rhythmic structures), e.g. solea, alegrias, bulerias, fandangos, etc. Getting a feel for the different palos will help you understand what's going on when you listen to flamenco or watch a performance.

Here's one place to start:

I would agree with machopicasso, though I'd also point out that part of learning a palo is not only the rythmic structure but the cante(singing), those two go together. Paco and Vicente both started accompanying and every flamenco guitarist must cut his teeth doing that. It's vital that you know as many melodies and can recogniza them while accompanying a singer.

what to listen to? Camaron de la Isla, Manolo Caracol, la Perla de Cadiz, Vicente Soto, Fosforito, Antonio Mairena and loooots of others... the point is to listen to the cante and learn as much as possible about it, as it will make you a much better flamenco guitarist than learning a lot of falsetas or solo tunes.

As far as learning material I'm not one to give much advise but I think oscar Herrero's dvd's are a good start.

anyway those are my two cents. Cheers and good luck! :)

Just listen to as many type of flamenco as you can.. and slowly you would be able to differentiate the difference forms of flamenco..

I won't recommend starting with cante. because you are interesdted in the guitar.
cante is more of an acquired taste. mostly after 1-2 years on solo guitar, you would hope on the cante bandwagon
