I've never been able to attract lustful women because of my playing. However, I do attract plenty of dudes trying to finger my sound port.

guys guys, they are not in the least crazy for guitar or guitar music (whatever kind that would be). if they are interested in you they will ask you about your guitar or music just to start a talk with you. thats the way it works, not the other round.
people always said that violin players DONT get chicks, this by definition. now look at Dave Garret.

Well, I am girl, and I am posting on the forum and find this topic very interseting

It's tough for chicks who play both electric guitar/flamenco to meet the guys who are interested in what they do!

You guys have it easy at least you don't have guys or should say chicks telling to give it up your passion just to hang out with them!

It might depend on the individual ambience.
I used to know a professional band with two ( good looking ) girls who would do background / partial solo singing and rhythm guitars ( both very proficiently ). Within the band and the musician scene of the town these girls were fully acknowledged.

It was the public who would rather focus on the appearance than appreciate the skills; especially drunk guys in the audience who would start screaming "strip off!"
The girls used to take it easy, though. At least I never saw them lose stance, neither backing down by dressing less sexy than used to.
As I remember the male fellow members of the band would get annoyed by those interjections, however.

( That provincial public was tough anyway. After about 15 years or so of striving the band split up, and the lead guitarist who was about as versatile and perfect rock guitarist as it gets, now being one of the unfathomed examples to me.
He gave up on the guitar for good and since years now is earning his money by laquering model cars.)

Of course, I took up the guitar for purely serious artistic purposes. It was no longer practical to continue with trumpet, and I needed a musical outlet.

It was my friend Pat H. who turned me to the darker side. We were University students. On Friday or Saturday night we would go to a neighborhood where a lot of more prosperous students had apartments. We would scout around for a place where a good party was going on, walk up to the door with our guitars in their cases and knock. When someone answered, Pat would say, "We're the guitar players." Almost invariably we were admitted.

Pat played steel string acoustic pretty well, and sang blues and folk. I accompanied. When Pat took a break, I played flamenco. Flamenco was a lot more popular in the USA in those days, the late 1950s and early 1960s. Carlos Montoya sold a lot of records. I had discovered Sabicas and Mario Escudero.

I wouldn't say it was necessarily our musical skills which impressed the girls, though of course the girls said they did. But it got us into the party, broke the ice, and gave us a chance to size up the talent and strike up conversations.

Often enough to keep us at it, we went home with a new girl.

But guys,

Even if you're a ****e guitarist, you only have to learn to smile like this guy (at 30 seconds) and the girls will be throwing their knickers at you.

i had much more success with girls, when i played E-guitar.
flamenco or classical guitar in general is not so "cool" and most girls probably think you are a loser or something. flamenco is a little cooler than classical though. i think classical guitarists draw the shortest straw (in german we say: they draw the A.sscard)

Yeah Arash,

Ruby Wax said a lot of girls want a tall, handsome, well-built guy running his own successful company who drives a top end car, is totally committed and faithful and is head over heels in love with her.

After they've been around the block a bit, then any joker under 45 with his own teeth and a day job will do...

(I bet a lot of the girls who gave Bill Gates the "sorry I'm busy" line are regretting it now.... )

cheers,

Ron

I was 49 when I got divorced. Had all my hair, ran 5 miles a day, fairly prosperous. Made the pleasant discovery that there were pretty girls in their early 20s who wanted a combination Daddy and boyfriend, and who didn't want to get married.

On our second date one of them asked me, "Richard, do you have a boat?"

At the time I didn't. "No," I replied.

"OK"

"OK what?"

"I never go out with a man whose age exceeds the length of his boat."

This was in the USA, so length was in feet. But after that I never owned a boat whose length exceeded my age ...

Hahaha... it's also my experience of the female gender's appreciation of flamenco guitarists (except for dancers of course).
I remember a girl asking me "Do you know how to play likeeee a John Mayer song?!' after I played her a Granaina... I just stood up and left... there really isn't any answer to that! lol

On the subject Ruphus started... I picked up playing guitar after seeing Slash play 'Sweet Child of Mine' on TV... I was 13 and I sat there thinking 'I need to do this!!'.

It's been a love story with the instrument ever since... taste and style have changed but the love, passion and respect for the instrument, and the players who dedicate their lives in playing it right, have never diminished.
Ever since I'm 13, I've had a guitar in my lap for an average of 5 hours a day. I went through periods where I would practice 10-11 hours a day, and to this day, I still keep a good 3 hours a day, despite a very busy professional life.
I have never taken the attitude where I started thinking that I was good... Despite all the sacrifice and effort, I'm not a good guitarist, there's a world of improvement to be had.
I remember a BB King interview where he said this: 'There's still so much to learn and so little time...'. In a nutshell, that's really how I feel about playing guitar in general and flamenco in particular... so much to learn and conquer and not enough time in one lifetime.

I attended York University in Toronto. I graduated with a minor in music... I was lucky to discover flamenco there as it was offered as a course. From there I seeked out other people teaching flamenco in Toronto and was lucky enough to take lessons from someone who's dedication and generosity in teaching and transmitting his passion are only matched by his incredible talent and knowledge of flamenco (no... it's not Ruben! ).

I've met a lot of 'flamenco guitarists' at York... for some reason ,they thought that taking a couple of lessons with someone who can barely play a rasgeado made them Paco de Lucia... they had no technique, no compas, no tone (for some reason, they all played 'Andalucian Guitars') and worse, no knowledge of the artform... people like that really make me angry because they advertise themselves as flamenco guitarist but haven't even listened to a Paco de Lucia album.
I even met someone who told me that he never listened to the great flamenco guitarists because he didn't want to 'soil his inspiration'... it's like a writer saying that he has never read Shakespeare or Celine, quite simply unthinkable and ridicule.
The great French philosopher Gilles Deleuze writes this beautiful sentence in his book on Francis Bacon (the painter): 'Staring at a blank canvas is like staring at the entire history of painting... it's like staring at every brush stroke, every colour and every shape ever painted. That's the kind of severity every genius imposes upon himself'.
I think that this applies to every area of art and science. As flamenco guitarists, we have the weight of flamenco history upon us and it requires a very long and painful learning process to even think of starting to create something new.

When we consider this... it doesn't leave us a lot of time to woe chicks! hahaha

With that she describes the healthy share of her gender ( = going for levelled interaction ).

But there exists a considerable number of ( men and ) women who are doomed to finding passionate suitors insipid / boring. Instead being attracted by the ones who arise in a nonchalant way.

A psychological configuration popularly desribed by Alice Miller´s book "Women who love too much".

( With the discreet figure of mine I have encountered more than a few ladies whose interest indeed seemed to be peaked because of man´s indifferent appearance.)

Hehehe!
Fate could have thrown in Bill Gates in order to teach people something.

- Though it mustn´t had taken his lucky strike yet with purchasing DOS for 80 grands, as his dad was quite a rich and caring for already.

I have actually found women more receptive than men in the sense that often guy friends are more interested in the technique whereas women may be genuinely moved by what you play.

In any case, who wants a woman who does not appreciate flamenco?

"chicks"...brilliant term - comic genius, reminds me of beavis and butthead!!!

...but try and refrain from using the term if you ever visit UK - or at least the Northern part of it??? - I don't think many would consider it sexist or harmful - the girls will just take the pish!!!!!!

Funny thing is that these birds seem to serve describing the other gender in so many different cultures and languages.

The ladies usually figure out about my supportive stand towards women´s emancipation and equal rights rather quickly, - or at least that I´m no cave man.
And me wouldn´t want to startle them in UK anyway.
Especially in Irland, which I´d love to visit one day.

well, it's hard to say because each genre draws in a different crowd and therefore different types of girls.

girls who listen to rock music are probably more likely to approach you.
and think about the setting too. for example, a girl at a restaurant probably wont leave her seat and family/friends to go talk to you. you have to go around and chat everyone up.
