I love this forum.
Just to recap, the question posed was how to solve the problem of playing guitar with cold hands and so far the most knowledgeable community of experts from around the entire planet have come up with
1. Wear surgical gloves with the fingertips cut off.
2. Move to Cairo
3. Drink garlic tea
4. Practice for 20 years so that you dont need to feel your fingers any more.
5. Sit on your hands
6. Engage in some S/M regime with Ron

Pim...that's what I love about it as well!

You can't get this kind of entertainment at Captain Bob's place.

cheers,

Ron

and my cold hands isn't just something in my brain

What happens in the Summer? In the Summer my hands are stiff and sweaty, in the Winter stiff and cold. It's always something - this is what makes me think it's more in the head than anything else.

Try crack. Crack will work.

Another method just came into my mind. you could put a notebook on your legs and warm up your main blood veins with the warm battery. Your fingers would get warm too I guess.. In the meantime you could watch a DVD or read through the foro! hmm.. Very interesting topic.
In past I also had problems with cold hands when I went to dance-classes with the tram in winter. I was always just in time,..and when it was winter I needed 15-20 minutes till my fingers got warm enough to play. Golpes from above the strings hurt very much with frozen hands... And I always did a lot of em.. :./ I used to wash my hands with warm water. The problem was, they stayed cold inside. So it didn´t really help fastly.

I have the ultimate solution to your cold hands. Just wrap 'em around a woman's ass! That'll warm 'em up in a hurry, not to mention other parts of your anatomy. And if it doesn't work - who cares?!

That guitar would be fabulous for the traditional classical guitar position.

to really, ahem, take advantage (groan) of this guitar, the way Manuel Molina holds the guitar would be best....

Before trying the plethora of "home cures" I would recommend a visit to the doctor. The symptoms you are displaying may in fact have a cardiac/circulatory/thryoid basis that may need to be addressed or there may be diabetes related issues going on--one may not be using insulin or other blood sugar medications but there may be pre-diabetic clincal conditions occurring.. You definitely want to rule out any physiological problems. That said, there are a variety of prescribed meds and some "home cures" that may work. All of them will be based on increasing circulatory effectiveness.

I'm reviving this thread because I thought it was worth mentioning the importance of warm hand while practicing/playing. You know it's getting colder outside day by day.

Practice with cold fingers and don't think much of it and you will get used to it, I promise.

We all got used to your useful comments. But I can't leave it like this. Practicing and playing with cold fingers will lead to injury easily. It's easy to warm your hand before. It'll take max 10 minutes. My advice is use spiky massage ball. Let it roll between your right and left hand. Use it on your forearm too. After 10 minutes your hands will be warm as hell. These little spiky balls are magic. They relieve muscle tension and stimulate blood circulation. One ball costs here only 2 dollars.

No it won’t it’s purely mental. Circulation is good and the sensation of touch is what gets affected, but once you get passed the mental block that cold=slow and out of control, anybody can play at their normal level regardless of the temperature. The fingers are not operating using any muscles really that need to be warm such as a runner. If the ball warm up helps your brain think your fingers will perform better, I’m fine with it. I just happen to have experienced that this thing is 100% mental, not physical. To have had that confirmed buy a guy like Rafael Cortes just makes me that much more assured that anybody could experience this effect.

It's all in your head... or your hands if it's not. Screen shot from last March insta entry. It was about 20f with the UV warming up the body some. Strings get a little wonky in the cold but settle down quickly. Fingers work just fine...

ps. this photo was taken ten days before that moose ass jacked me :/

I highly doubt that. Is it scientifically proven? There is a good reason why the word warm-up exists and why athletes do warm-up before any activity.

Is he physiotherapist?

Yes it’s been scientifically proven that muscles are not in your fingers. Only the thumb. So the warm up that athletes do is not affecting your fingers because they are warming up muscles before running or boxing or whatever you are going to do in cold weather where you could pull or strain something. So other than your thumb muscle in your palm, you are not going to be damaging any ‘muscles” when playing guitar in cold weather. Any finger exercises are not warming fingers physically, it’s a mental warm up. When your skin gets warmer it affects your touch sensation, not your speed and accuracy of movement. And if you are over working your thumb muscle I would question what technique you are using for it, I don’t see a need to strain that one for any technique on guitar, thumb wrestling maybe?

Rafael Cortez actually owns a guitar and played it in cold weather. If you ever get a flamenco guitar you can go outside and try it for yourself.

I think you misunderstood my point. Scientific proof of whether fingers have muscles or not is not necessary. It's not about it. I'm writing about tendons in the fingers. You keep playing in the cold all you want. But I never play guitar with cold fingers.
