I highly doubt that. Is it scientifically proven? There is a good reason why the word warm-up exists and why athletes do warm-up before any activity. Yes it’s been scientifically proven that muscles are not in your fingers. Only the thumb. So the warm up that athletes do is not affecting your fingers because they are warming up muscles before running or boxing or whatever you are going to do in cold weather where you could pull or strain something. So other than your thumb muscle in your palm, you are not going to be damaging any ‘muscles” when playing guitar in cold weather. Any finger exercises are not warming fingers physically, it’s a mental warm up. When your skin gets warmer it affects your touch sensation, not your speed and accuracy of movement. And if you are over working your thumb muscle I would question what technique you are using for it, I don’t see a need to strain that one for any technique on guitar, thumb wrestling maybe? Rafael Cortez actually owns a guitar and played it in cold weather. If you ever get a flamenco guitar you can go outside and try it for yourself.
