RE: Cante Appreciation Thread (in reply to orsonw

Yo no me quejo a mi estrella (Soleá de Triana)

Cante: Paco Taranto
Guitarra: Manolo Franco

From Paco Taranto's 1988 album "Suspiros al mar"

Lo que intento lo logro
Yo no me quejo a mi estrella
Nunca he querido un cosa
Que no me salga con ella
Todo lo que intento lo logro
Yo no me quejo a mi estrella

De las cosas más ocultas
Y el tiempo tiene las llaves
Y el tiempo tiene las llaves
Y ay el tiempo tiene las llaves
Y a la corta o a la larga
Que con el tiempo todo se sabe

La salud y la libertad ay ay
Son prendas de gran valía
Y a todo aquel que le faltare
Y ay pena tiene de la vida

Y en Triana los serenos ay
Iban diciendo por la calle
Que duerma quien tenga sueño
Y ay que yo no despierto a nadie

What I attempt, I succeed
I don’t complain to my star
I've never wanted one thing
That I didn’t achieve
Everything I attempt, I succeed
I do not complain to my star

Of the most hidden things
Time holds the keys
Time holds the keys
Oh time holds the keys
And sooner or later
Over time everything is known

Health and freedom oh oh
Are items of great value
And for anyone who lacks them
Life is not worth anything

In Triana night watchmen oh
Were saying on the streets
Lets sleep everyone who is tired
Oh, I do not wake anyone.

Here's a link to an attempt by myself and a singer, any comments welcome.

Thanks Orson! Where did you get that from? If there were a reliable source online somewhere (even if requiring pay) where I could find such material with clearly written lyrics and their translation, plus the actual music, I would SURELY go there and subscribe. It would not only help my flamenco, but it would help me learn Spanish too. Awesome stuff hombre!

Verdad!

Ramzi-
I work with a few singers and when we are working on a letra I sometimes get them to translate for me. These translations may not be perfect; they explain that sometimes it's quite hard to translate to English and retain the feeling/meaning.

There are a few sites on the internet with the letras in Spanish. I like this one as it has a youtube link to the letra being sung-

Song title: Que un Toro Bravo en su Muerte (A brave bull at the time of his death)
Album: Al verte las flores lloran 1969 (Flowers cry when they see you)

This Tiento interpreted by Camarón de la Isla, and PDL at the guitar, is a precious gem from my point of view. The lyrics have a sense of bitterness as well as pretty sour descriptions of smell and the emotions that lead from it.
For me, the lyrics of this song reach the depths into the essence of pain. Love and pain, pain of a betrayed love. The hate here becomes a reaffirmation of the love he still feels.
The second part seems like a pastige as the tone, the character, the theme changes.
Remembering maybe the beggining of their love.

"Tienes que derramar más sangre
Que un torito bravo en su muerte.
No sé como tienes valor
Pa hablar de mi malamente.

Anda, vete fea,
El cuerpo te huele a lumia
Como el marinero a brea.

Allá abajito se ve una fuente
De cal y canto arena
Donde bebe mi serrana
Agua de la fuente nueva.

Yo a ti te pondría
Un puente pa que pasaras
De tu casita a la mía."

"Yo have to shed/spill more blood
that a little brave bull at the time of his death
I don't know where you get the courage/nerve to speak
bad about me

Go, go now ugly girl
your body smells like whore
the same as the sailor smells like "brea" (brea in spanish is a mixture consisting of tar,
fish, tallow and oils to paint, make boats
waterproff, impermeable.)

Down there you can see a little fountain,
made out of lime and sand stone,
where my "serrana" drinks (referring to a girl from the sierra/mountain)
water from this new fountain.

I would build for you
I would build you a little bridge
so you could pass/walk from your house
into mine."

Tangos

Cante: Magdalena Montañes ¨La Marelu"
Toque: Paco Cepero

De Badajoz yo me he venio
Yo me he venio de Badajoz
con mi nino de la mano
que es el que camelo yo
Camelo Camelo Camelo camelo yo

Te acuerdas, hermana mia
cuando te peinaba el pelo
que mi nino te acariciaba
como angelito del cielo

De Badajoz yo me he venio
Yo me he venio de Badajoz
con mi nino de la mano
que es el que camelo yo
Camelo Camelo Camelo camelo yo

Todos te encontrarian
y yo sola con mi nino
que el que me quita las penas
y el que me da su carino

De Badajoz yo me he venio
Yo me he venio de Badajoz
con mi nino de la mano
que es el que camelo yo
Camelo Camelo Camelo camelo yo

Cuando lo veo rezar
las lagrimas a mi se me caen
de ver a mi nino del alma
pidiendole a dios por su mare
Lo quiero Lo quiero Lo quiero lo quiero yo

De Badajoz yo me he venio
Yo me he venio de Badajoz
con mi nino de la mano
que es el que camelo yo
Camelo Camelo Camelo camelo yo

Déjame surcar una vez más, por bajo guía;
Déjame morir entre las olas, a la deriva;
Deja que mi cuerpo de madera, se rompa con las olas bajo el sol;

Me quemó tanta pena ay no puedo aguantarme
Me acerqué al viejo marino
Gritando como solo se hace una vez

Déjame surcar una vez más, por bajo guía;
Déjame morir entre las olas, a la deriva;
Deja que mi cuerpo de madera, se rompa con las olas bajo el sol;
Y déjame, déjame morir... a la deriva...

Déjame surcar una vez más, por bajo guía;
Déjame morir entre las olas, a la deriva;
Deja que mi cuerpo de madera, se rompa con las olas bajo el sol;
Déjame, déjame morir…Ole...a la deriva…

The night now falls over the forgotten boat
That in the belly holds a story, an enchanted mermaid.
The forgotten boat, dreams of kissing the water
And plunging his dried body, between the white waves

And let the stars be turned off
And the fish be disguised as reflection
To not disturb
And I sit beside her and hear her crying
Asking the fisherman

Let me sail once more, through Bajo Guia;
Let me die among the waves, drifting;
Let my wooden body break with the waves in the sun;
Let me, let me die ... Ole ... drifting ...

And if they don’t want to give my body to the sea
I don’t want them to take pity on me
Let the fisherman break me in to pieces
And I burn in a bonfire before you.

This burning sorrow oh! I can’t stand it
I got close to this old fisherman
Screaming like one only does it once

Let me sail once more, through Bajo Guia;
Let me die among the waves, drifting;
Let my wooden body break with the waves in the sun;
And let me, let me die ... drifting ...

Let me sail once more, through Bajo Guia;
Let me die among the waves, drifting;
Let my wooden body break with the waves in the sun;
Let me, let me die ... Ole ... drifting

Y no llegaste a quererme (Granaina)

Cante: Miguel Poveda
Torque: Chicuelo

For Ramzi I've left my ideas for chords within the letra (I don't know theory so chord names are probably incorrect feel free to comment) Translation to follow (as with La Marelu) I know the rough meaning but I want to check or someone here can translate?

B7 Ay Em Ay D7 G C Ay Em C B7

Y no Em llegaste D7 a quererme D7

Eras mis cinco G sentios, C

Y no D7 llegaste D7 a quererme, G

Y que G desgraciaito he sio D7 (Abass) o D7 (Fsharpbass)

Y que he tenio D7 que aborrecerte D7

G Tanto como C Yo a ti, te he querio. C B7

The last letra:
y yo culpa no tengo
que de te hablara la gente
ay porque te viene culpando
y yo culpa no tengo
que de te habla a (la gente) ((starts the remote early in the melody))

ay que te quiero
pero de la chino te lo pelo
(not exactly sure about this one but I'll ask my teacher next lesson.

A traditional form of this letra:
Dios te va a mandar un castigo
y eso es por que tu te lo mereces
porque me vienes culpando
si yo culpa no tengo
que de ti hablara la gente

Cante: Camaron de la Isla
Guitarra: Paco De Lucia
Se Murio Mi Madre

This song has become one of my all time favorites. The song is packed full of emotion, while also having a certain emptiness to it(the guitar and the cante).(contradiction!?) The first thing Paco plays in this song is just so damn bad ass, while still having a feeling of emptiness. That opening line " Murio mi madre..." just kills me every time and my mom is still alive! It was very important to me, to understand this song...i've been using a language learning app(HelloTalk) where you talk to people from other countries...So i asked this beautiful woman from spain for a translation. I have a problem with 1 of the lines, she says that he says "yo no quiero verte" x 2, i hear that the first time but the second time it sounds to me like he says "yo no quiero verdad".

Español:
Murió mi mare
sólo me quedé
desamparao
y sin calor de nadie
fatigas pasé
Yo no quiero verte
yo no quiero verte ay,
ni escuchar tu voz
y aunque te tenga presente
como una maldición

English:
My mom died
Now I'm alone
Helpless
and with no ones' warmth
i went through fatigues
i don't want to see you
i Don't want to see you ...ay
not even to listen to your voice
although i have you in my routine
Like a malediction

and here is a video of Camaron's Mother, i feel like it's important to include in this post.

Possibly we could get a translation for this video =D.

letra of heroína:

endrogado
que soy enganchado
al ver me suelen decir
y no saben que me ha dejado
y que me quiero morir

siempre estoy tirado en las calles
en los bares y las esquinas
cambio la vida por la muerte
ay por la maldita heroina

no puedo vivir
porque llevo mala vida
no puedo vivir

El torta was incredible, some more from him:

the first couple letras:

my spanish isn't great so no guarantees about the letras

Bulerias by Alonsito "Rancapino Chico" and the great Paco Cepero.
Perfect example of less is more!
For me it doesn't get any better than this, I love the way Anlonso moves and plays with the compas.
And Ceperos acompanying is sublime.
When can I'll try and get the letra

Arte puro!!

A cante kariokee tutorial. Those who don't understand Spanish can either appreciate the features of the presenters beauty for rather a long time, or skip ahead to the singing at 2 minutes

Personally, being hung like an Ox I find singing in this register only just about works if I wear my daughters tightest pair of jeans, but some of you wee-balls might manage it
