proof that your playing is at it's best when at the moment when you just got out of your bed...
Insane that they didn't tell him to comb his hair LOL
My opinion is that it is guasa on the part of singers and series producers, having a bit of a go at his larger than life persona thanks to Pohren and the hippy invasion. Fernanda shoots him a bit on another piece in this series. Whether or not, it is good for posterity anyway.
Hey guys, thanks for the tip. I was so focused on Fernanda's cante that I never noticed the hairdo until y'all pointed it out. Maybe Morante's right, it is a guitar forum.
I will preface by saying I have made orders of magnitude more and much much worse mistakes then exhibited here….however, the poor guy seemed clueless at first she is singing fandango, as he screws the chords up bad in the first letra (1:10 onward), and the second one he finally figures it out after the second line of verse, and then at 4:30 he thinks she is done and launches into buleria but she quickly shuts him down, then gives him some big guasa at 4:45 (ole! “King” of the guitar!!!, beautiful face!!!!)
Funny how a large group of Americanos made a guitar player normalito so famous. Seems like nothing changes: they still don´t understand the importance of el cante. They should have gone to Jerez and listened to the Familia Moneo.
Diego made mistakes his two expert nephews wouldn’t have made. Juan is a professional journeyman who has accompanied far from home. In his prime Paco del Gastor recorded one of the best live albums with Fernanda and Bernarda on the Ocora label, it’s a masterpiece.
If Brook Zern were alive he’d wash your mouths out with jabon, spank you and send you to bed without a supper. Morante, you ****ing trouble maker.
For those of you who haven’t deeply listened to this, you should before you poop on Diego for passing on Moron toque to his nephews. They extended the toque and used it in an exemplary way to accompany top singers.
The rest of you who know better, you’re not Andalusis by birth, you hush.

Personally I prefer Fernanda with Paco del Gastor. Although Paco del Gastor did make a similar mistake of closing before she'd finished in another important documentary. But with more grace than his uncle.
What happened to "Jerai cortes and his wacky outfits, and crazy facial hair persona... ....cant we let the forms and the songs and the compas and the music do the talking? instead of trying to put a silly hat on it?" ?
When you posted that I was actually going to refer to Diego Gastor, in that people in flamenco have been putting on 'silly hats' for some time. Then I refrained because this is about personal taste- what is a silly hat or not.
But Orson, of all the takes they likely did, they used that one because she’s so cute realizing she blew the take. And Paco’s Gerundino sounds so tasty here I forgive. The next take or two he probably nailed it, but they went with this one for charm.
Since we bonded over the marriage of Paco’s toque and La Fernanda, just between you and me, I’ll drop a secret. It’s really annoying when people drum up the old blame the Americans for making Diego into the center of a cult. I’m not sure, and I have no proof of this, but I’ll go on the record saying that the producers from Spanish TV in the 1960’s who created Rito & Geography very likely did not have droves of American moronies clamoring at their office doors with petitions to direct the attention of the Spanish TV producers towards moron.
The subject has been the center of many a flame war, and while I wouldn’t go so far as to say any guy who revives a 25 to 30 years old flame war is a poncey blowhard, I will say Zee Americains are tired of being blamed for unleashing Diego Mania on the world.
A fair challenge! but Id say Diegos whacky hair is the result of being an old fella and not giving a ****, whereas Yerai and co.s choices are the result of giving too much of a ****!

Just a bit of guasa Stu , I'm not good with the emoji use.
Hair aside. I'm referring to his deliberate and exaggerated persona. I'd rather be listening to Fernanda than being distracted by that. Again these are all my uneducated personal tastes and reactions, so irrelevant, people can do whatever they like.

She finished the letra but often there is a repeat of cambio and conclusion, which she maybe wanted to do in that take? Obvious the producers thought it was “cute” to leave that version in. He does not play the cambio (the word “otra madre” should be where it goes, a C chord on count 3 instead of Am-G-F). However, the alternate take on CD he does play por medio, and again no cambio and she does not repeat anyway. In this version “ otra madre” comes again in the same place he should have put F on count 3.
Well which guitarist hosted the combover best? Diego or PdL? Both had a combover. I don’t hold it against either of them, because that’s a bad practice, to tempt fate over a thin hair joke. Who knows, if you make fun of a flamenco guitarist you might trigger a curse which will cause baldness. I wouldn’t do it.
Morante, I think this Diego lives with a few toes in the spirit world, and when he plays, he has a foot in the spirit world. And then there was Agustin Rios, whom I lived near for 20 years in Oakland and often saw him in the grocery store. He was haunted in a different way.
Agustin sang beautifully, but not often. He was very I think shy, and separated from people in Spain. One of my friends who knew him better than me said he was in a kind of self exile in greater San Francisco area. I’m friends with his ex girlfriend who he lived with while he was in California. I worked on his Archangel, he trusted me with it. I also took many many classes with his cousin Juan, who was as very sweet to me. Once when Juan was visiting Berkeley for a month playing shows and giving classes ( I hung out with him a lot) he asked me to walk him to the post office. We set out down the Main Street in Berkeley called Shattuck Ave and he hooked his arm in mine and took him to the post office. Two grown men just sauntering down the street arm in arm loving the afternoon. He is a precious human.
I’ve never met the other two sobrinos, which is my loss, but I’ve had tender feelings for Agustin and Juan and always will. I’ve also seen many of the Moneo folks in person, but don’t know them like I know Agustin and Juan, which is not very well, but well enough.
If you could have only heard Agustin sing in his later years, really good.
You know Stephen, this dusty corner of the Foro isn’t the same whilst you are too busy having a life to check in, share your often brutal whitisisms and histories.
The first time I saw a Diego dG video it was so obvious he was having a good time and it seemed that was more important then the guitar playing itself but he was good enough after so many years that it was integral to the whole process, he knew he could play and didn’t have any ****s to give. ¡Olé!
And his hair? Really, ya looks like he just crawled out of bed but whose? Bet he wasn’t sleeping ;) Number of years ago I was at some stuffed shirt uniform wearing government meeting, the lady running the show at some point flat out asked me in front of about twelve people seated around a long table, “ what do you have to do have your hair that messed up?” Without missing a beat I replied, “really good sex” If I was to guess I would have to say Diego never missed a beat.

I prefer my flamenco guitar spicy, doesn't have to be fast, should have some meat on the bones, can be raw or well done, as long as it doesn't sound like it's turning green on an elevator floor.

I’m glad at least someone misses me.
I’ve been painting a lot since early summer, late spring. Teach English in the public school 3 days a week, teaching guitar ensemble 9 am to noon Saturdays. Getting ready for a performance October 26th. - and when I’m not doing any of that, evenings, Thursdays Sun and Mon I’m guitar making. After finishing the work in the guitar shop at 10pm I go into the studio and paint for 90 minutes.
I’m having a show of painting Nov. 16th. Looking forward to the year I quit teaching English so I can torture myself full time with guitar making and painting and drawing.
There will be ten paintings in the show. Here’s a sneak peek at two of them and a watercolor from a different group of drawings.
Boy with a Barracuda and The Fish Witch

The guy holding the boat is untitled, the port scene is a bit unfinished, I’m going use some judicious greys to knock the bright white down into better light. The shark with figure is titled ‘Show Off on the Dock’
I have 13 paintings ready to frame and I’m going to paint two more before the show, then pick ten maybe twelve to show.

Hijack away. I like those paintings. All of them. At least they're in colour. Nothing Morante ever posts is in colour. Well, hardly ever.
Seriously though, they resonate with me, I think in part because they remind me of paintings my father did before I was born, with a similar use of muted colours and even subject matter. I don't recall ever seeing him paint and I think that's sad, because he had an eye for it. My mother also painted but I think it was more of an intellectual exercise for her. All my sisters are pretty good, they do shows and sell out and the like. My feeling is, if talent is passed along, they got it more from dad. Most of the artwork I have in my house was done by family, but the two of his are my favourites.
I'm happy you posted those. Livened up the place. Now go comb your hair before Ernie notices and starts making crude remarks.
That ship has sailed for me already, my friend. I never had good hair, and now it's receding and I have a bald spot on the crown of my head. Eventually I'm going to start shaving my head, but I'm still trying to hold onto the tiny bit that's left LOL
