American flamenco guitarist Stan Olm...

Passing the news on from his brother who contacted me.
Stan was a known to many people in the US, Spain, Japan and Korea as a good solid flamenco player who could accompany cante.
Evidently he committed suicide, but I have no details.

Stan visited me in Japan twice as he was living in Korea teaching English. It’s very sad, he was a fine player. He had a severe drinking problem. He didn’t try to contact me, but a few years ago asked me to delete the video I made of him on my YouTube channel. Thus might be the only document of him playing.
I’m very sorry fir his family, I had always hoped he’d get it together. Suicide is especially hard on survivors in families, watch your friends and family and take the steps to get help to at risk

Sorry to hear that Stephen.

All I knew of him was that video you posted, which I found when I was rummaging around looking for whom that traditional falseta was attributed to (Ovejilla). He played it well.

Condolences to his family and friends.

This is kind of strange that he didn’t contact me or anyone I know mutually. Not what expected to hear. I’m going going look into it further.

I’m mentioning it here because he was a pretty good guitarist por derecho, he wasn’t a star seeking soloist, he mainly accompanied singers when he lived in Spain.

Man this is such sad news. I stumbled across that video earlier this year when I wanted to start learning Tangos de Granada and I found that video to be great and also super cool because he chose to play it in E Phrygian while Miguel Cortes, The Habichuelas and the Carmonas typically play it in A. He came off like a really bright guy and I'm sure he'll be greatly missed.

This really sucks. Stan was a talented guy with a lot to give. I was hoping to see him again someday. If you ever get depressed you have to fight for yourself and tell other people you are fighting. You have to make it.
