Chicks should stick to playing the broom handle. But seriously,That's awesome! I hope the trend continues. Even in the US it's a surprise to see an accomplished instrumentalist. There are not that many of them for no good reason.

In that group of people interviewed, there's at least one who is a very decent pro player and there's one who just sucks.

Interesting stuff.
But if she played in a pena in Andalucia, I'm afraid she might cause riots: "my next piece is a tangos called 'midnight in Gibraltar'."

Two women in particular I really enjoy listening to for various reasons.

I find Belen's particularly interesting because she is in that raw stage of flamenco playing where she is transitioning from good to great. Usually on YouTube you'll see one side or the other, but she's right there. Keeping my eye on her and expecting big things.

That is terribly sad news. Though I didn't know her it feels like such a huge loss. I am so thankful that someone was able to record her playing before she passed - she inspires me even more now.

The only good one is Temo.

There are also a few videos I can't find at the moment that have some young Spanish women playing in penas that knock the this junk out. If I find them I'll post, but I've seen vidoe of women playingf or singers that kick ass.

I actually wish more women played flamenco professionanlly, guys are such dickheads to deal with.

Because women are famously easy to deal with???
We both suck, just in different ways.

I want to double the market really. Women always smell nicer when they visit the shop.

I've seen 13, 14 year olds testing and messing with the guitar and the girls go off and dance. That's cool, but I'd like to see more double and triple threat women where threat #1 is guitar. I'm fully supportive of this.

There are always wonky players who get didactic.....and the faux flamenco offshoots, that's fine too- at this point who cares to fight about. The idea that girls get the green light as teens to dance and are pushed away from the guitar by the culture, or boys, or anyone has to be spoken against. Young women should be actively told if they want to be first a flamenco guitarist then the field is open to them.

It's more then just looking at videos thinking a few women with guitars are a curiosity. Women playing has to be a regular part of flamenco.

I wonder if this thread would equally apply to "Women in the Macho World of Foroflamenco"? I don't think there are currently any women who are members of the Foro, and there haven't been for years. Is it because the Foro is "guitar-centric" (a recent topic that led to a thread on "Learning CANTE together")? Or are there other reasons?

Several years ago we had a few women who would contribute to the Foro. Foremost, in my opinion, was Kate. I'm not sure if Kate played guitar, but she was heavily involved with her husband in the flamenco scene in Granada. She had a wealth of information and wrote about everything from the flamencos she knew well to the Spanish Civil War. I always enjoyed Kate's comments and think the Foro is poorer for her absence.

There was another woman named Alyssa (sp?) who did play the guitar, but she dropped off the Foro years ago. There were a couple of others who seemed to have problems. One kept asking about a guitar she should get but would not listen to advice, and the other seemed to get upset anytime someone challenged her with a different point of view. Both seemed (dare I say it in today's hypersensitive world?) neurotic.

At any rate, I think the Foro would benefit by including women as members, but they don't seem to be attracted to it. Whether that is because few are into flamenco guitar or cante, or the almost complete lack of baile on the Foro, or because they shy away from the controversial, rough-and-tumble debates that occasionally occur is an open question.

Not that many female flamenco guitar makers either.

And not just flamenco guitars. Does anyone know of any female luthiers who make any type of guitar?

Off the top of my head, for flamenco there's:
Shelton and Farretta from the foro
Maria Conde
Ana Espinosa from the Baarslag workshop in Granada

Certainly not many.

There are many famous women makers now, but still mostly men are known. There are not that many Flamenco guitar makers in the world so it's a smaller scene.

Linda Manzer is probably the most famous woman in the guitar making scene.

Thanks to those who listed female luthiers. While they are still few in number, there are more than I would have thought. I had only heard of Amalia Ramirez but wasn't sure whether she was actually making guitars or had just taken over the business end.
