My first Accompaniment Por Garrotin!!!

Hello everyone, yesterday i went to my Palmas class and it happens that twice a month my teacher goes to the same flamenco school to accompany the Garrotin class and he asks me to come with the guitar for more understanding. Well, yesterday i went as usual 1hr before the Palmas class and the told me that my teacher didn't show up for some reasons and since i'm there, they asked me kindly to take his place for the day!! I was surprised and terrified cuz the class yesterday was huge as they were preparing for the school annual show and i was under everybody's eyes

Fortunately, i did study the falsetas and the basic chords for this dance and it really went cool with some mistakes but i was never out of comas or causes any confusion to the dancers! It really felt Fantastic and they were anyway happy that they danced at the presence of a Guitarist! '' It's only one year that i'm studying flamenco'' so imagine how good that can make me feel

Accompanying dancers is really awesome. It makes things on the guitar twice clearer and gives confidence makes you feel wanna go better and better

After that we accompanied the dancers with Palmas and that was great too.

Just wanted to share this with you guys, dunno how your first accompaniment to the dance went

hey man, im on the same page as you are. I just got back home from accompanying the dancers for garrotin. I did it all by ear, I listened to the recording they had, and figured out 2 chords and the strumming pattern, and thats how I only accompanied the escobilla section. They loved it and now they went me to learn the falsetas by ear and the other chords that I couldnt figure out on the spot and have it ready by next monday because they want me to perform with them on june 14th in an annual school party.

Tom!! if you have anything, could you please send it to me? shukran :D

theres the G major chord, theres the weird chord that has( starting from 1st string to 6th) E,C,A,D,A,F# notes. (whats this chord called?)

I noticed in the recording theres an E-like chord and an A-like chord, anyone has any ideas about the chord progressions for this garrotin?

Whenever I've accompanied Garrotin the verse chords have been: (in G major which is how I've usually seen it done)

D7 - G
Dancer remate (D7 - G)
Optional repeat of first line depending on singer (D7 - G)
E7 - Am
E7 - Am (or stay on E7 depending on singer)
D7 - G
Now the bit where the singer goes "Ay Garrotin" etc
D7 - G - C - D - G
D7 - G - C - D - G (C and D chords are shorter)

The chord you asked about is a D7. If you let the open first string ring it's technically a D9.

Hopefully this helps.

LooooL, im laughing at my own post. She looks so dangerously close to somebody that its a bit shocking. But my main message i wanted to have come across is: DO NOT accompany Garrotin!! Its an evil palo, really. Please dont fall into the trap. RUN!!! And do not use the word "cool" together with "Garrotin" in one context. Garrotin, by definition, is NEVER cool

What do you mean man? Not even when they sing this bit?

Ay garrotín, que garrotín,
que de la vera, vera, vera de San Juan.

could some one please tell me the story behind it? and whats the evil superstition behind it? I know about petenera, but what about this one?

It hurts my ears man.
Its just too "happy & gay" sounding (no offense in a sexual way). From those happy palos, I like Alegrias and Sevillanas because the compas can be driving. And if the composition is really good maybe Guajiras and barely even Colombianas. But Garrotin seems to have nothing to attract me? If i ever get asked to accompany Garrotin again my default reaction will be to drop the guitar if its in my hands and run away as quickly as i can.
