I think it can be achieved by tapping the strings with a nail vertically. Kind of like a right hand apagado.

ok I reviewed the DVD and realize he is not wearing the lavalier he has on later. I still think it is distortion caused by the mics on the master tapes. There are some other spots where I hear drop or crackle distortion. After the spot in question there are two crackles that seem like aftershock. you can hear AND see them in the youtube vid by watching the bottom of the screen at 3:45. There are two other spots at least something similar happens with the audio, at 2:35 a quick drop out, and the end of the aii triplets at 3:22 a short crackle again.

The spot in question, if it was a mute it was probably an accident as the intended technique happens verbatim at 1:47. The right hand formula would be 16th note flam m-i-iup. It is a standard ending, to be different then just ami down, or just m-i down which he also does. It is clear he is not muting with pinky so and to make that sound with just the fingers on the board, how did he mute the open A string??? and also, there should be a flam sound in the half beat (3 sounds in the rhythm space of 2) yet we only hear 2 sounds, a muted sound and the chord. Also the mute sounds "close" no ambient room noise, and super loud, and no reverb, and the chord sound sort of fades in with no attack.
Doesn't make sense. I say it is an "artifact" caused by microphones.

I agree with Ricardo that the variation is similar to what he does at 1:47. This is a typical Tomatito run that he always ends in that matter, or almost always.

Just played that part on VHS and it's just the same as in the above video.

Doesn't seem that big of a deal really....if we are talking about that little "swallowed" 9 beat thing that occurs between 3:44-45?

Or maybe you are talking about something else?

I am not sure this will help or just complicate things, but this variation is very similar to the end of a typical Tomatito falseta which you can see at 3:08-3:12 ish here.

Does anyone have tabs for that Am falseta he does at 4:31? It's cool!

In another off topic question, is Tomatito playing a conde af25r in the original encuentro footage that Todd posted?

Man that guitar is badass; of course Tomatito's skills are probably 90% of it...

Tomatito is pure badass.

Man...he must be the funkiest, most rhythmic Buleria player ever...

Even more "natural" groove that Paco or anyone IMO.

His "chubby" fingers just always look so damn comfortable and unstressed.

Hey Ron,

I have to agree, it's not for nothing Pepe Habichuela called him "the pope of the bulerias."

It's no wonder so many of us are Conde obsessed, I think these guitars are the symbol of this level of mastery; unfortunately, I am not sure every Conde is worthy of its price tag.

Still, I want one!
