Paco de Lucia - 2010 Concert in Germ...

The German TV Channel 3sat broadcasted this Concert.

I missed the opportunity to record it myself, but the youtube member Lekeflamenco did, and he uploaded it on youtube.

I downloaded all parts and merged all parts together again to one single video with good quality for full viewing pleasure and experience.

I uploaded it here and you can download it:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=NEKATYHI

Just wait 60 seconds, then click standard download.

The format is MP4 (m4v).

So its also playable on PS3, some DVD recorders, Apple, etc. and of course on your PC or MAC.

This is what i always do with youtube videos btw:

i download them (choose the best quality on youtube), merg them if there are many parts, copy them to an USB Stick, connect the USB stick to my PS3, relax on my couch and watch everything on my big TV.

Great video Arash!

Really clear concert/broadcast stuff and not the usual shaky camera or mobile phone.

Paco plays well there, but....honestly Gerardo these days does that stuff much better IMO.

I respect Paco immensely, but you cannot be the King in any art all through your life...other people have to come up too (Bing Crosby/Elvis/Beach Boys/Beatles/Punk/Eurythmics/Robbie Williams etc)

Generations change.

If I mention Bob Dylan to my teenage daughter, she doesn't really know who I'm talking about except for one of those old ancient hippy 60's farts in her opinion....

And honestly, year by year Paco seems to sound more and more like Manitas de Plata in his touring concert stuff.

I'd much rather see a Merce/Moraito concert any day.

cheers,

Ron

i fear "these days" Gerardo is a bit injured.

I think this was harsh .. I mean it's paco .. maybe he's getting older and there're more mistakes happen during his concerts but I think the worst piece paco plays is definitely better than the best manitas plays

Agree partially. Definitely to much rumba, tangos crowdpleasers.

you are welcome guys.
glad that many of you downloaded.

---

Dark, i have videos of paco on my pc, but what do you want exactly?
i mean a little more precise please,,,, i can't upload everything i have.

i could upload the concert from 2004 which was in Germany / Burghausen, for instance.
its quite similar to this one. a little bit better imo and more cositas buenas stuff.
but the video quality is a bit cheaper.

---

Re. Paco:

what i observe is that Paco is not in peak form in all his concerts these days.
sometimes he plays with almost no mistakes, muted notes, etc. and sometimes he does.

in the 2010 concert in Cordoba, he played better than this one in Germany.

i think in this age, its fully acceptable that you have more off-days than you had when you were 20 years old.

but comparing Paco with Manitas de Plata is ridiculous and probably the most stupid comparison i have ever heard in the foro.

sure bro I know that .... specially that uploading is sux
actually it's not a matter of "what do I want exactly" because I enjoy anything from paco so I can't be more precise if you know what I mean ..
the merging Idea you did over here is fantastic and you mentioned that you have other merged ones , so I guess the intention behind my last post was to see other merged videos you made
2004-Germany could be awesome ( just if you feel like uploading it )
thanx again for this nice video I really enjoyed it
and Merry Christmas

I thought that might stir things a bit...

I used the wrong word "sounds". I mean obviously Paco cannot be compared to Manitas de Plata as a guitarist.
What I meant was that Paco concerts seem to have the same sort of "aura" about them as the Manitas ones, with the audience waiting in expectation to see "The World's Greatest Guitarist"...so it was more like an audience waiting to see a Shuttle Launch or Total Eclipse, rather than experiencing a "normal" Flamenco concert.

I remember once reading in a Pohren book that he was NOT a good accompanist to have in a "live" situation, because all the audience were ignoring the singer and waiting to witness Paco doing "something amazing".
I was only in my twenties when I read it and thought Pohren was an old fart and how dare he criticize Paco de Lucia...but I see now what he was getting at.

Paco was only about 22 or something when he was crowned "The Greatest Flamenco Guitarist there has Ever Been."
While it must have been pleasing to him at first, it surely must have turned into a burden for him as he got older, with people always expecting him to play "amazing things" all the time.
Also the constant worry about losing the crown, like a World Heavyweight Champ losing his title and the fear of being considered a "has been".

Players like Paco Peña or Gerardo etc don't have that worry and can at least enjoy doing concerts and giving schools and workshops and living a fairly "normal" musician's life, while Paco has been pretty much a recluse most of his life.

So to me anyway, his live concerts seem to be too much of an "event" or "spectacle" rather than a concert of Flamenco music.

Even when I saw him in Edinburgh, while I was waiting for the show to start I could pick up bits of conversation from some of the younger guys near me, talking about various Electric players and arguing about who was the best "shredder" etc and "Friday Night in San Francisco"... so they were not there for the Flamenco, but just to see some "amazing guitar playing" from a guitar legend.

(I see also in this 2010 concert he did his "Guitar Picado Duel" bit with the other guitarist...where Paco "wins". He did the same thing in Edinburgh years ago too.)

The "Teatro Real" live concert must be the best concert of solo Flamenco guitar I have ever heard (although Grisha comes pretty close now), so I certainly DON'T think Paco is any Manitas de Plata.

I think however that he IS trapped inside his own legend and there is nothing he can do about it now except just accept it and try to rise to public expectations on stage and pose for photographs and sign guitars for adoring fans.

So I think the "crown" has been more of a poisoned chalice than a great honour IMO.

I just don't think Paco's concerts are great "Flamenco" shows. More just "Paco" shows.

As I said, I'd rather hear Merce/Moraito any day... but that's maybe just personal preference, so I don't expect others to agree with me.

cheers,

Ron

Its not surprising that you dont like his concerts, because you already admitted you dont like the music itself, mainly Cositas. But it bears some fun how you try to reason your taste by the theories of what the audience may think, and his fame. As if you would like Paco's concerts regardless of what music is played there if only the audience had lesser expectations

Regarding the crown, Paco is respected not only by some electric guitar fusion fans, but by the whole flamenco community on this planet, so im not sure what you are getting at, but please elaborate if you have more. The sentence about him being not a good accompanist was very interesting.

RE: Paco de Lucia - 2010 Concert in ... (in reply to Arash

The only thing that really sucks is...that Paco plays the exactly same things for decades....... And now his techniques get worse and worse but the price gets higher and higher to see the same stuff in worse and worse quality...and so many rumbas.... IMO at the moment a ticket for a Paco concert is not worth the money.
Well, basically everyone does the same.. Tomatito as well..Same stuff for decades. He has so many great compositions out..but he always plays the same old stuff.
Gerardo Nunez was always fresh and showed new stuff... I went to around 5-6 of his concerts and every concert was almost completely different but awesome. Its so damn sad that he injured his hand... That really so sad. One of the greatest innovators in flamenco ... out of order.

Well, some folk (like me) think Paco is an absolutely fantastic Flamenco guitarist who really expanded the whole idea of playing Flamenco guitar.

Others believe he is God, that there is no one to touch him nor ever will be again and when he departs this world, the whole of Flamenco will die with him.

cheers,

Ron
