Ron.M -> RE: ****New Beginners Challenge Summer 2011 **** (Apr. 2 2011 11:22:41)

Before we go into weeks of arguing about what to play, I'll make the decision this time.

The 2011 Summer Beginners Challenge is to play a suitable Malagueñas intro for a singer.

If a singer asked you to accompany him doing a Malagueñas for a concert, you would have no choice would you?
You wouldn't say, "Hey how about making that a Tarantas? I know some cool falsetas for that." [:D]
So be professional about this and no whining or squabbling.

As far as uploading a professional track to copy, I'd say to make a change, this time you have a maximum of 2mins 30seconds to play an intro for that palo, as if for a singer.

Compose, steal, copy, butcher ANY intro you want for the chosen palo. It's up to you.

Malagueñas intro, Key E, Capo 2nd fret is what the singer wants, so just do it.

Put your name up if you want to enter.
Somebody volunteer to be Challenge Administrator.
Entries to be in for about 8-10 weeks time, so you can discuss that but come to a decision soon.

Let's get moving.

I'll ask Simon to open a new section in the Challenges Forum once the rules and dates have been finalized.

cheers,

Ron

BUT a Malaguenas isn't a palo that a beginner would know anything about Ron. I'm a beginner and I've never heard of it and I don't htink my teacher has any plans to introduce it in the next few years at least.[:-][:-]

Ron.M -> RE: ****New Beginners Challenge Summer 2011 **** (Apr. 2 2011 12:29:51)

Hi Sean,

All the more reason to listen to as many as you can.

It is not an unusual palo in a singer's repertoire.

Basically it's a free form Fandangos going from Am, G, F, E with a flavour from the Malaga region.

Dig through your records and look on YouTube.

It's not a challenge to play stuff you know already.

Just bluff it. Copy stuff. Change stuff.

See if you can hack your way say through a 1min 30sec intro.

cheers,

Ron

rogeliocan -> RE: ****New Beginners Challenge Summer 2011 **** (Apr. 2 2011 12:31:13)

I agree but it's setup like an school assignment. A bit of research on your own, find a few falsetas and learn them.

Of course a beginner would not play has fast as this but I found this on Youtube that might set people up in the right direction. If anyone knows where it comes from I would like to know. I love this whole family of palos.

Edit: this comes from Manual Granados 4th book.

Sounds like a plan Ron.

I've just been "youTubing" (I'm guessing that is a verb these days)[;)] some vids looking for ideas.

Ron.M -> RE: ****New Beginners Challenge Summer 2011 **** (Apr. 2 2011 12:38:52)

Good man, Sean.

That's the way.

cheers,

Ron

Adam -> RE: ****New Beginners Challenge Summer 2011 **** (Apr. 2 2011 12:45:29)

I'm up for it!

And Sean, that's a great video! It's not often you find good materials for cante accompaniment like that online, for any palo.

XXX -> RE: ****New Beginners Challenge Summer 2011 **** (Apr. 2 2011 12:49:38)

Could be also a free for all challenge as the intermediate or even advanced players here might not have done this too often, either...

That is a good idea, then we would end up with a whole bunch of material for others to learn.

That could be an idea for the next Intermediate and Advanced Challenges, Deniz.
Maybe a complete 3-4 minute solo covering arpegio, tremolo, picado, continuous ras etc?

But just for now let's keep this intro as a Beginners Challenge.

cheers,

Ron

Thanks Escribano.

NOTE:

Nobody post ANYTHING in this new section, just keep the ideas coming in on this thread until we know the dates etc.

GRAHAM_B will make the first post in the new section, laying out the rules and the contestants and judges etc and will keep it updated.

cheers,

Ron

Adam -> RE: ****New Beginners Challenge Summer 2011 **** (Apr. 2 2011 14:13:49)

Well, one thing to clarify: is the time limit 1:30 or 2:30?

There will be a bit of give and take on that one I'm sure....

so where do we put the trash talk like

for example ?? thats all part of the lead up to it ....

Adam -> RE: ****New Beginners Challenge Summer 2011 **** (Apr. 2 2011 15:10:07)

Rico_Kiko, I don't know you personally like I do Neotriz, and you seem like a perfectly nice chap, but if you want trash talk, I am happy to destroy you as well. [;)]

quote:

The MIN time can be anything....5secs even if you want.
The MAX time of the recorded intro would be 2:30.

(So folk don't get over indulgent....I bet a singer would stab a guitarist who played a 2:30 intro anyway..[:D])

Rico_Kiko....I think Graham should make the first post with the entrants/judges & rules and times for easy access to info once we know what is what.

cheers,

Ron

vuduchyld -> RE: ****New Beginners Challenge Summer 2011 **** (Apr. 2 2011 15:45:42)

Definitely love the "take charge" attitude, Ron!

In fact, I love it even though I'm not crazy about this challenge. Maybe I'm one of the most beginning beginners on here, but this will be quite a stretch for somebody of my limited exposure. There seem to be some not-quite-so-beginning beginners on here...

Hopefully I'll find a way to throw something together.

paul.troutfisher -> RE: ****New Beginners Challenge Summer 2011 **** (Apr. 2 2011 15:59:43)

Thanks Graham.

I'm in.

Well I'm not trying to be bossy or anything, just trying to skip the usual arguing about palos and keys etc etc etc that goes on and on.

The truth is, the real world of Flamenco is like that.

If you were asked by a singer if you would accompany him doing a Malagueña on an upcoming TV spot or something....you'd have no choice.

You'd either say "Yes, but I'll have to work at it.", or "No...I can't play that, you'll have to ask someone else or sing something I know."

cheers,

Ron

Graham_B -> RE: ****New Beginners Challenge Summer 2011 **** (Apr. 2 2011 16:02:17)

I've put the rules up on the new thread[:D]

Please note I've taken the executive decision to initially put an end date of midnight (UK time) on Saturday 28th May.

( note to self ....Destroy Ramparts at first opportunity /....[:)])

I haven't worked on any Malagueña before, but I can assure you both that you are going down on this one. DOWN I SAY [:D]
