Carmen Amaya

Whats the deal with Carmen Amaya? I hardly ever hear her name mentioned on the forum, but to me she is one of the greats! I would go as far as to say that she is probably my FAVORITE female cantaor. Does anyone else share my appreciation for her? The recordings with sabicas are just MAGIC!

Oh, I've also got a question and a special request:

Are the "Queen Of The Gypsies" LP and the "La Reina Embruja Gitano" CD the same in terms of content? I know the latter is the Spanish translation of the former, but I was just wondering if the songs are the same. If not... anyone who has the facility to copy LPs/Records onto CD: PLEASE send me a PM.

Thanks amigos!

I like her too, but she's a dancer not a cantaor.

PRIMARILY a dancer, but you can't see that on the CDs... Only HEAR what she is singing... her cante is superb too IMO.

No. Both are good, but the LP Queen is REALLY kick butt. I am really shocked that it is not on CD, although it might be and I have not come across it yet. Honestly, I like putting on my old record player and hearing the little crackle pops.

La Reina has a DVD though which is really cool and you get to see her sing some bulerias, dance solea on a table with castañuellas, etc.

Thanks Ricardo. I just got the Queen of the Gypsies LP on CD (courtesy of a VERY kind member)... its great, and I have to say: that last track, the Alegrias is AWESOME!!! There's also lots of "foot stamping" audible throughout, which I wasn't expecting, but TBH, I really like that! I sometimes forget that Flamenco even has dancers because they aren't really audible on CDs, but that sure ain't the case with this one!

Read this book:

http://www.amazon.com/Queen-Gypsies-Legend-Carmen-Amaya/dp/0964637413/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-8984945-8904736?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1178421819&sr=1-1

I haven't read it yet, but I have heard great thigns about it.

Paco Sevilla lives here in San Diego, he was one of the first teachers I went to for flamenco, he's very knowledgeable.

I firmly believe you'll really enjoy it.

Thanks Paleto! I had no idea that there was a Carmen Amaya biography available... and in ENGLISH too! I'll try and get hold of a copy!
