I just picked up this two CD + DVD album. I give it two thumbs up.
Qawwali Flamenco was some sort of concert held in 2005 with Poveda, Duquende, Chicuelo, and a Qawwali singer and band. I guess it was supposed to be some sort of "mega event" and the first merging of flamenco and qawwali. To be frank, I could care less what it was.
The music is not a fusion of these two genres, which I think may have detered some people from buying it. Although Poveda, Duke, and Chicuelo participate in at least one of the Qawwali tracks.
A very good flamenco performance by the trio. Chicuelo's playing is suburb. Better than his playing on Duke's last album. I really think that these guys sound so much better live anyway. I eat this live stuff up. As far as the Qawwali music goes, its actually pretty good.
I had never even heard of Qawwali before. The singing is not harsh, mostly major key, with a sort of african, and drone element to it. Very cool. I can respect the singers talent too.
Anyway, I don't think you will be disappointed. But I won't refund your 40 bucks if you are.
I personally realy enjoyed the DVD. The qawwali singer Faiz al Faiz is amazing! Incredible voice. Duquende and Poveda do a great job there also.
There was a link to a video of a part of the DVD on flameco-teacher.com but I can't find it anymore. Pitty since it was my favourite piece of the DVD. Anyone have it somewhere?
I recommend it. There is some flamenco there (atleast on the CDs there is a alegria, solea por buleria and a buleria which are all good) and the qawwali is an interesting experience. I realy enjoyed listening and watching. And if nothing else, you get a good glimpse a Chicuelo's playing (which is also superb).
