Anybody still alive?

I've had a little read, and see some familiar names, but the luthiery section is a little quiet - who's still active?

PS - No quote button, or am I just not seeing it?

Much love to all x

I just checked my own pulse. I believe I’m alive.

If you want to see a flurry of activity just announce that you have developed your own brace tuning system and make sure you insult everyone who questions the veracity of your claim and you will have 60 sycophants lapping up your every utterance as if you were the second coming of Gandhi for flamenco guitars.

It’s actually nice this way because we could actually have conversations between guitar makers and guitar fixers without the barrage of nonsense from the sycophants.

If you want to quote someone hit the button on their post that says ‘Post Reply’ that should create a reply window with their post quoted.

And welcome aboard matey. This is the pirate ship of guitar Foros and I’m so happy to see you here. I hope you post some of your repair projects and talk about what you’re doing. I think many readers will follow you avidly and there are a few repair people who you might benefit from exchanging information with.

As far as your intent and your reasoning behind your repair work I think I’m clear on what you’re after. When I first started watching your work it wasn’t at the level that it is at now. In the last year you’ve challenged yourself to explore new kinds of difficult repairs, it’s brought practice up a lot. I get it that you’re not aiming at a conservators type of road, so don’t worry I’m not going to lean on you about that. I think your personality and work will make this particular luthier chat box more well rounded and richer.

Arrrrg!

I am alive.

although not that active.

Winter in the UK + garage worskhop means I stop any building activity.

I'm sure once I get to finishing my current build (over next few months) ill be popping up with some post asking for help and reassurance etc

I'm gonna start anothe rbuild this year too so ill post some pics. and try to get some ort of vibe going.

Firefrets, im not being rude but you've only ever made 4 posts? and youre here asking why its so quiet?
I know you have done so with this post, but why not get involved more yourself? the forum is created by the members right?

Do you build guitars? maybe throw out some pictures.

I must admit this luthiery forum does have a pretty lifeless feel to it.

Hey man.
I'll certainly keep in touch with you and drop in from time to time. Going from all the tech work of electric guitar etc to the woodwork of acoustic instruments is a big learning curve, but one that fascinates me. It's taken a long time to get this far, but I'm not in it for the quick fix. Still a long way to go, but you can't have your fingers in so many pies and expect to master it all over night. It's like music. Some guys play one style. Some play a little bit of everything.

Hi Stu.

My post was a tease for a few guys who are on here.

We've been friends for years on other forums, and they invited me over, hence why I've only 4 posts.

No, I don't build guitars. I currently repair and restore them. I'm working towards building, but building isn't my priority. More a case of embracing it as part of the learning curve needed to be a good repairer.

I actually like Flamenco guitar. I'm an improvising musician, as opposed to a sheet reader, and can make stuff sound like it's Flamenco, but wouldn't fool a proper player.

Glad to see you made the jump to light speed!

A forum is what we make of it. That being said I’m a hot and cold posting builder. Just now starting a Classical so I’ll not be posting here about her… much ;)

I do recommend you dig through the years of Lutheiy posts, a lot of good info there. Stu’s build threads have a ton of good info and a few, shoot what am I going to do now, posts. Couple other members have build threads lady few years worthy of your time once you need a break down saw dust and wood shavings etc.

Lazy saterday morning so I’m catching up here and there online.

The quote button is there for me.

Business has been very slow so far this year. So I am building a set of 4 chairs that I have wanted to build for a long time, like this one that I built over 30 years ago, when I was a furniture maker, after George Nakashima's Conoid Chair Design, which I have only seen pictures of. That is my 2nd ex-wife modeling the chair for advertising.

The process of making four of these chairs reminds me of the story about a furniture maker who built a chair for someone and charged them $200. Then the customer ordered four more and the maker said the cost would be $1000. The customer said, "but you only charged $200 for one chair and now you are charging $250 for each one when I order four. Explain this." So the furniture maker said, "One was fun, but making four is a lot of work."

Yes. For a copy of Nakashima chair it’s realistically about $2500 per chair and that’s a fraction of an authentic Nakashima.

You are a Curmudgeon’s Curmudgeon, sir.

Hacks may be knocking out copies that lack some of the more beautiful details for the price you quote. Some authentic Conoid Chairs made by Nakashima are going for over $12,000 each. My facsimilies would be going for at least $5000 each in current pricing, were I to sell any.

When you have one finished please post some photos.

Yeah I still pop by but I don't have much time to post these days. I'll chime in when I have something useful to say though.
