I'm working with a dancer that wants the falseta from the first 26+/- seconds in the middle of her dance after a letra. I'm having trouble trying to feel this in perfect compas, it actually almost feels like he's kind of rushing it??? Is he metronome on and I'm crazy???? I can play it to where it fits but I end up with pauses and things where he doesn't have them.......

No way Ramz, this phrasing and rhythm is not metronomic, I've spent way too long on this. I normally pick up rhythms and ride in the pocket pretty easy, this HAS to be libre....... I can play exactly along with him but if I'm on my own with a metronome I'm lost..... Are those two opening A notes 4 & and then the chord is on 1??? That's what I guess.... I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!!! hahaha

Yeah I did but I'm having a hard time pinpointing what you find difficult in it so I was wondering if the original track was different or something. The melody sounds like it's following a typical tientos rhythm.
I don't know how you're using the metronome here but maybe try "half-timing" it? By that I mean play at the same speed you are now but put the metronome at half the speed. Sometimes if you put the metronome on "too fast" you can get tripped up on syncopations and I feel that counting only half the beats can help with that.
In my head I'm singing along like this: 1 2 (3) ... 1 2 (3) ... 1 2 (3) bada .... tagata(da) and marking the beat on the parts in parenthesis.
If you're breaking it up in strictly binary form, I guess it would be like this (here each thing in parenthesis is just one of the notes of the melody):
Not the best representation lol. Then add that slight shuffle feel if necessary, throw in the trills and that's pretty much it no? I wouldn't follow that rythm to the letter or it won't really sound like tientos, but it's just as a crutch I guess. Anyways, that's all I got!
PS: oh and that first (5) can also be the 4 right before it, that way it really is the same pattern all the way through. lol now I just read over my post and I feel like I'm the one who's been taking crazy pills! Meh, maybe you'll get something out of it!

Just take the first part of the melody:
(5) 6 (7) 8 / (1) 2 3 (4) / 5 6 (7) 8 / (1) 2 3 (4) / 5 6 (7) 8 / (1) 2 3 (4) / (5) 6 7 8 / (1 end of the rasgueado) 2 3 4 / repeat. That's what it should be. Now what you're doing: (5) 6 (7) 8 / (1) 2 (3) 4/ (5) 6 (7) 8/ (1) 2 (3) 4/ (5) 6 (7) 8/ 1 2 3 4 / (5 end of the rasgueado) 5 6 7 8 and then because you're rushing through it you're starting the next part of the melody on 1 instead of on 5, so you're already off by a full metronome beat as you're using it. What you're playing pretty much the same "distance" between each note but the rythm of the melody should be closer to the strumming you're doing at the beginning.

You're still rushing through it. It's weird because you have the strumming down perfect and the melody basically follows the same rythm as that, but as soon as you switch to the melody you change that rythm for some reason. When you start going off rhythm is on the first E in the melody (well F#, first string open). You're playing that note too early.

Wow, Lenny - I'm surprised this is giving you a hard time. To my ears it sounds like a piece of cake. :P I'll try to make a video. I have a feeling once I try it, it's going to be all screwed up and then I'll realize this mysterious nature of its difficulty (though I don't think that's going to be the case, I hope). Jaja!

ok here is my 2 cents worth..With tientos it has to have a 2/4 feel. You can write it 4/4 but tap your foot on beats 1 and 3 throughout. The in between bits you can feel to interpret how you want. I have downloaded my version..dont worry if your chords etc are different to mine...i just did a quick listen...cheers peter

i can play that dropbox (which is played/phrased pretty well guitar wise with a solid groove heading for beat 1 and 3) but obviously i don't know how that compares to the video nor what to seems the problem in understanding it. I did work with dancers every now and then who were less strict/aware of compas every now and then and generally the only thing to do was go along with their "flow" and misinterpretation rather then facing an evil eye for "corrupting" their interpretation. Obviously i met even more dancers were i was the weakest link :-).
