The New Lights in Flamenco Guitar

Hello folks I was wondering, who are the guitarists that now can be considered that are taking the lead. I know Tomatito and Vicente amigo are on the top, but who else seems like a good source for new sounds and fresh ideas. I've heard some of Anton Jimenez' work and hi is amazing, his solea por bulerias "chiquitita" my favorite!

Anyone else you consider the new lights in flamenco guitar world?

Antonio Rey is the only one I am really into. Many others are very good, but he is the only one I have in my car all the time.

Rey is the first that came to mind as well. You also have guys who are technically ridiculous like Javier Conde coming up but composition wise he has a long way to go.

Id have to say of what ive seen thus far Vicente is quite possibly the biggest and most famous. Taking into consideration all his concerts and how active he is

In essence my top 2 is

Vicente Amigo
Antonio Rey

I would have to say the more famous player and concertizer is currently Tomatito. At least here in USA...haven't seen Vicente come through in quite a while. Paco Peña has even been through more times, although normally in smaller venues.

Vicente is coming to sf in march-I have my ticket. I think he is currently the top dog. Saw Tomatito last time he came and have to say that technically he was not on his game, at least when compared to the top players. I still loved the show though.

Diego and Antonio are the current rulers, but Diego prefers to accompany, hence the single album to his name so far. Vicente is still on top, Tomatito plays concerts, but I feel he's a bit over his best - Gerardo would still be there were it not for his injury, but he's still one of the best composers around. Some of the new guys are really-really good and to watch out for - Jesús Guerrero will release his first album momentarily, Manuel Valencia as well. You have to watch out for Pepe Fernández, I feel we're lucky because there are many great players out there, some even with very original material.

Tomatito and Vicente sell more tickets in the U.S. because we're behind the times. Diego and Antonio are the ones doing new and interesting stuff though....imo btw they are the "who to watch"

I was just going to say that VA has a few concerts lined up next year March in the USA.

He is quite active. Perhaps more so than anyone else

Paco Cepero

IMHO Vicente is still on top and will keep being there for awhile because of his defined style and clear identity in the panorama. Nobody else plays with the musicality of Vicente but is getting a little to far from the tradition IMHO.
I still like a lot Rafael Riqueni and Gerardo Nunez as composers.
I agree on Antonio Rey, Diego deal Morao and Jesus Guerrero. The last one has a very strong left hand touch.
Myrdim is a beast even though his music is a little peculiar.
The Habichuela/Carmona Family keep their niche and I find them very pleasant to listen also.

The thing with Vicente is, is that he is famous. As far as moving away from the tradition, he has been away from it for quite a while However, His concerts are always mixed up with some traditional flamenco, celtic, rhumba and so forth. To an extent I would go as far as saying that is now the future. The purists will obviously have a problem with that but IMO I think its acceptable as long as there is some sort of flamenco being squeezed in somewhere.

Juan Requena is one of my favourite guitarists. He has his own unique toque in my humble opinion and i'm really so into. Check this out:

After listening and watching Antonio Rey on the inter webs and actually paying attention i got to say wow. There are so many good guitar players and a abundant supply of music/videos that i hadn't given him the attention he deserves.

I saw youtube video with Manuel Valencia a while ago i remember being impressed by his strong left hand, will be interesting to hear his Album.

I agree Antonio Rey is awesome.
But the other one I am impressed with is Amir John Haddad.
I always like Nino de Pura even though is isn't considered top.

It's amazing how many excellent guitarists are out there... I'd have to go with Diego del Morao
for having the most "distinct" sound. I don't know what it is about his way of playing but I recognize
it's him after not even 5 seconds..
To add a few names that haven't been mentioned yet:
Yago Santos is nice for Riqueni lovers

Nino de Josele for the slightly more jazz oriented:

and Jose Luis Monton has a lot of creative ideas in his compositions
