Starting on Rio De La Miel

Going to start learning it today. I wonder if it will sound okay without the percussion. I have to perform it in March in a very academic setting.

Videos may be a bit difficult to produce as I learn it. I have to learn it quickly - my goal is to be finished by this weekend. It will be a bit complicated, as I just finished "Se alza la luna" yesterday, and that's a lot of music to remember.

Hey Grisha,
I've played parts of it before with no percussion or palmas and it sounded ok. That being said, it certainly sounds better with rather than without, in my opinion.
By the way, I can't wait to hear that Cañizares piece. One of my all time favourites!

Thanks, John! I am sure it sounded beautiful through your hands.

Yes, that zapateado is wonderful. Extremely detailed.

Oh, got you! The reason I posted this at all is because at least one person wanted me to learn that piece and perhaps share a slow video. It took me a few years to get to it.

Yeah, I was hoping we could get more of the falsetas in slow motion like the video you posted before. I was a bit surprised you said you needed to learn it because I was under the impression you already learned it when you posted that first falseta some months ago. In any case, best wishes in getting it down & nailing it at the academic setting. I'm sure it will rock, with or without percussion. Olé & happy new year!

Thanks, Ramzi! I learned two falsetas from it before for Arash, but never touched them since. Don't remember a note.

I feared as much. I'm thinking of trading mine in for a better pair, if you ever decide to auction yours on ebay I'll bid as high as the next guy ;-)

Enjoy Rio de la Miel - I greatly look forward to any videos that come out of this project.

Finished. In the last 2 months I learned these:

“Villa rosa” (Minera) – Rafael Riqueni
“Tio Arango” (Soleá) – Vicente Amigo
“Se alza la luna” (Zapateado) – Juan Manuel Cañizares
“Montiño” (Fandango) – Paco de Lucía
“Río de la miel” (Bulerías) – Paco de Lucía
"Plaza alta" (Soleá) - Paco de Lucía

I have now 2 weeks to practice them for the concert.

I would wish you luck, but you dont need it.

These pieces are all terrific. I'm sure you will nail them all.

Cheers!

Very nice... Montiño is a tough one even with a capo on the second fret.

Do you play this piece, Juan? It is, indeed, impossible. That left hand pinky work is insane.

That was exactly what I was referring to. The left hand pinky movement in this piece kind of put me off a bit but I was trying to play it with the capo on the first fret. Maybe I'll take another look at it with the capo on second. I'm sure you'll gobble it up though even without cejilla.

Grisha, i dont know if you'll be back to this thread, i know you're busy,
but i was wondering, do you do your own transcriptions by ear, or
do you use sheets?

Thanks, Juan.

Todd, I always use my ears. I don't read tabs, and sheet music for flamenco is kind of silly. I just purchased AmazingSlowDowner, and it's great. I used VLC player before.

Aretium, I will be performing it in exactly 2 weeks and one day.

Hi Grisha. Would you say that growing up with a very fine classical guitar teacher and sharing with him the work of transcription from a very young age helped you along in this or is it something anyone could do from scratch on their own in their 20s-40s ?

Like everyone else on this thread I am pretty certain that you will do the music, the composers, your father, everyone here and all of Russia proud in Moscow. Have a great trip.

Thanks for believing in me! I need a little confidence boost right now.

I think there are two things that help me do what I do. One is being a perfectionist. And another one having a lot of experience learning by ear. I started doing this when I was about 8 or 9. With my father's help my first piece, Sabicas' buleria Temas gitanos, took us about 6 months to learn. Now I can do that in a couple of hours. I think, it's just practice and attention to details. And knowing what's possible and what's likely.
