I have had a Yamaha CG 171SF for several years; good little camping guitar. It is a little better than average Yamaha. Most of my good guitars are ported, so this week I ported the Yamaha. The results were amazing, not only volume increased, but also richness and complexity of tone. Every guitar I have ported was in my opinion improved, but relatively speaking, the Yamaha benefited most. Anyone else punch holes in cheap guitars?

Funny thing about the place from where we hear the guitar is that I really like the sound from the back of the guitar and I find myself tilting it forward when I look for "that sound" :)

to "new player". My source says over 1 1/2 inches gains nothing. My guitars have a simple hole of that diameter at the apex of the upper bout. I have heard improvement in tone and output in every guitar ported whether heard by the player or listeners at a distance. It works. I am not trying to debate this very tired issue but see practical and positive effects from this end.

I actually have 2 other luthier made guitars that were ported before I purchased them. So I am a big supporter of ports, they sound amazing. Louder, clearer and better tone INDEED!
The reason I ask is because my guitars have different size ports.

When the port gets to big, it starts twisting the sound. It gets nosy sounding and the basses start to be overwhelming.
I like soundports, but I dont like them to big ( 1, 1/8 inch max) and more important, I dont like to have the port right under my ear. I prefer it closer to the heel. A big port just under your ear is impressive at first but i gets annoying because then you only hear the port and not the front and what comes out of the port is not exactly what comes out of the soundhole. With a relatively small port some 10 - 12cm from the heel, you hear both and you get a kind of stereo sound which is rich and whic still has the sound of the body
