Who likes repair work?
Do you prefer repairing or building?
I'm not sure what my own preference is, but I enjoy repairs because every one is different. The other nice thing is that you get to see a variety of guitars and there's always something new to learn.
And I take the view that every problem has a solution, even if it will take a long time and a lot of work. Of course, that can make repairs too expensive so, I would guess the professional luthiers would rather be building new?
What proportion of your time do spend on repair work? I know a violin maker who no longer has time to build new, he is so busy just repairing, and he says, he makes more money from this repair work.

I enjoyed repairing my two guitars with my luthier friend for all the 20+ hours that went into it... Im sure I wouldnt enjoy fixing others guitars as much

I just started a complete restauration of an old guitar from Granada. It´s got varios big cracks in the top and the back, some of it´s bindings are coming off and It needs a fret job. I was kinda nervous about the project at first,but i´m really enjoying it now I´ve started with it. I think it´s a great opurtunity for me to learn new things. So for now I really like it!! Maybe it´s because nothing went wrong yet

when it comes to guitars, I´m a builder. No doubt. I think I would enjoy repairing violins, because they are constructed all the way from start with the idea that you can take them apart pretty easily. Guitars can be taken apart, but they are not prepared for it in the same way. Most Luthiers specialized in violins do repairing and most specializes in repairing. But there´s nothing like carving a violin. I just finished this scroll

That looks really nice Anders! My teachers are violin builders, one day i´ll give it a try and build myself a violin. I prefer guitars for now because I can´t play the violin

great stuff;I love that sort of thing. I recently completed a Contreras restoration and at the moment I'm working on a 1960's no name peghead from Valencia. Then I will start major works on a 1970 Morales (Granada)
Hope your restoration goes well. You'll learn a lot.

For me, I like both building and repairing. That way you get exposed to instruments you would never see or play otherwise. It gives me something to do while the glue (and paint) are drying. My latest venture is a violin rescued from a pile of trash on the side of the road waiting to be picked up. It was in a sad state! Top and back separating from the rim, 4 cracks in the top, missing purfling, etc. I like the challenge of making something playable again.
