Sounds like the Taurus workshop

quote:

The Taurus workshop made many Ramirez “Guitarras de Estudio”-student models, as well as models with the Taurus label.

Taurus was in Barcelona, so it could be that the bracing was bought in for manufacture. Not unusual but not indicative of a quality instrument. Just a guess.

RE: Nail Problems "BE GONE" (in reply to Patrick

Thanks for the info patrick.

I'm curious how the Lume system works in comparison with the Miro kit...

I found the following article a few days ago:

http://www.flamencoshop.com/flamencoguitar/guitarnails.htm

Is there anyone who has tried both acrylic and the super glue/silk ways?

I used acrylic for maybe all together a year, but never really liked it. I have fairly weak nails and would like to try something new. In my experience, acrylics in general sounded good for rasgueado, but I really don't like the way arpeggio sounds with them. I always had an artificial sounding arpeggio when I used acrylics and I can hear others sounding that way too. A good example is Jose Luis Monton. I can unmistakably hear his acrylics on the one cd of his I own. A friend met him a year or two ago and confirmed my ear.

I decided to see if taking any supplements would work. I found a study done in the UK on biotin, which claimed to make quite a difference for people with really bad nails. Biotin, I think, has helped, but it did not make a huge difference (I take 5mg daily). The nails break rarely, I think the biotin has just made them less brittle. Like others, I began to use my left hand for more day to day tasks and those coupled have made a difference, but not the kind of change I wish I could make.

I think it really does boil down to gene expression in the nail bud, no matter what your diet is, you are going to have the kind of nails you inherit.

Super glue, or cyanoacrylate, works fairly well for me, but I can't make it last longer than a few days without cleaning and reapplying. I have been using just cyanoacrylate, nothing else for a while. Unlike acrylics, I have found it to be flexible and sound natural but it doesn't seem to last me very long, even 2 coats.

The other thing I don't like about acrylics is the thickness. The ladies who have applied it for me always made the nail way too think. This can be controlled if you do it yourself, but at least the women who applied it for me never really got the message. I finally tried it myself but it was a lot of work and after all that it didn't sound natural.

Does any one have anything to say about the Miro kit? It's available through flamencoconnection.com

In any case for certain techniques, the natural nail sounds best to my ear (arpeggio), but in the case of rasgueo, really strong nails (even acrylics) seem to sound best. But since I don't have that strong of nails and don't want acrylics I am kinda stuck it seems.

Does the Lume kit sound good? Natural I mean, like a natural nail? Or does it have that ultrabright, unnaturally high frequency sound like acrylics?

Anthony,

Here is the long and short of it.

I have used the Miro kit, and all it uses is silk with super glue. It was a pain in the butt. After about two days, the super glue got so brittle the stuff would pop off, just like you are experiencing. It also attacks the nail surface. I think it would be fine for repairs.

If you don't like the sound of acrylics, you probably won't like the sound of Lume' as it creates a very stiff nail surface, but I had the same issue with Miro, because I had to build it up to keep it on. The major difference between acrylics and Lume' is the ease of application. You don't have to file between coats like you do with acrylics, as the gels self level.

I am experimenting with nail lengths with Lume' to get the most natural tone. I have found short nails to be the best. I keep them flush with the tip of the finger. I keep a thumbnail about 3mm. To overcome the over bright tone, I went back to less bright trebles, which did the trick.

Do I get a bit of clicking? Do I get a bit of that synthetic tone? Yes I do, but the fact remains, I now have nails that I can rely on. In the last two days, I have fished and done yard work and my nails don't have a mark on them. I'll accept the trade off and just learn to play with the stiffer nails. Until I find anything better, I won't change.

Thanks Patrick.

I if I sounded too critical of acrylics, I apologize to all. I didn't mean to. What I tried to do was to say "in my hands" I couldn't get it to work as I wanted.

I really appreciate the info.

Hi, all!

Perhaps, I have a little tip for you,

A frend of mine is a proffesional flamenco guitarist, and he let grow his left thumbnail.
when it is big enough, he will cut it, save them, and when he needs it, he glues it on his right thumb.
easy, cheap, and one finger less to take care of!
greetings, Peter

That's funny, I was just at a website that had a very similar product, and other guitarists' playthings too. What ever happened to the Ducco and toilet paper method?

Estela,

Are we on the same wavelength? I just stumbled onto that same site just today! Yes, it does look very similar. All I can say is, it's the best thing I have done for my nails. They hold up like iron and you don't have to do much of anything for about a month.

I guess by saving your nails you will not get rejection problems, when sticking them back, cause there from your own body
