Paleto -> RE: Nail Problems "BE GONE" (Sep. 13 2003 18:20:23)

Thanks for the info patrick. I'm curious how the Lume system works in comparison with the Miro kit... I found the following article a few days ago: http://www.flamencoshop.com/flamencoguitar/guitarnails.htm Is there anyone who has tried both acrylic and the super glue/silk ways? I used acrylic for maybe all together a year, but never really liked it. I have fairly weak nails and would like to try something new. In my experience, acrylics in general sounded good for rasgueado, but I really don't like the way arpeggio sounds with them. I always had an artificial sounding arpeggio when I used acrylics and I can hear others sounding that way too. A good example is Jose Luis Monton. I can unmistakably hear his acrylics on the one cd of his I own. A friend met him a year or two ago and confirmed my ear. I decided to see if taking any supplements would work. I found a study done in the UK on biotin, which claimed to make quite a difference for people with really bad nails. Biotin, I think, has helped, but it did not make a huge difference (I take 5mg daily). The nails break rarely, I think the biotin has just made them less brittle. Like others, I began to use my left hand for more day to day tasks and those coupled have made a difference, but not the kind of change I wish I could make. I think it really does boil down to gene expression in the nail bud, no matter what your diet is, you are going to have the kind of nails you inherit. Super glue, or cyanoacrylate, works fairly well for me, but I can't make it last longer than a few days without cleaning and reapplying. I have been using just cyanoacrylate, nothing else for a while. Unlike acrylics, I have found it to be flexible and sound natural but it doesn't seem to last me very long, even 2 coats. The other thing I don't like about acrylics is the thickness. The ladies who have applied it for me always made the nail way too think. This can be controlled if you do it yourself, but at least the women who applied it for me never really got the message. I finally tried it myself but it was a lot of work and after all that it didn't sound natural. Does any one have anything to say about the Miro kit? It's available through flamencoconnection.com In any case for certain techniques, the natural nail sounds best to my ear (arpeggio), but in the case of rasgueo, really strong nails (even acrylics) seem to sound best. But since I don't have that strong of nails and don't want acrylics I am kinda stuck it seems. Does the Lume kit sound good? Natural I mean, like a natural nail? Or does it have that ultrabright, unnaturally high frequency sound like acrylics? Anthony
