I was listening to the Radio 4 programme "Loose Ends" when I heard this announcement in the intro..
"And the temperature will be rising in the Loose Ends studio with the luminous and magnificent Concha Buika, the 'flamenco queen', whose passionate and versatile singing style have made her a huge star in her native Spain and all over Europe."
The girl was a nice singer, I think she's good... but Flamenco??
So it's the same again. BBC Broadcasting to the nation and "educating" them about Flamenco. Man....they do it every time.

If all the whiners who are about to indulge in another of these discussions were to actually spend the time practicing, who knows what kind of geniuses would be birthed by this forum in a couple years...
This is what we call in Spain "coplas". You can find many flamenco singers that do coplas. You even have coplas por bulería. It has nothing to do with flamingo, fakeflamenco...

I agree that there's lots of elitism on the foro. I don't think there's much harm in discussing this anyway although to me, it's just not that important whether it's considered flamenco or not.
I remember seeing this singer in Pedro Almodovar's "Skin I Live In" (great movie by the way). She has a really unique voice that grabbed my attention but at the same time I don't think it's my cup of tea.

And like Pingaloka said, it's normal for flamenco singers to dabble in coplas and pop and vice versa. In Spain it doesn't raise a single eyebrow. Miguel Poveda has done several CDs of just coplas. This year he released one of the best flamenco albums in a long time (which nobody here will listen to anyway because it's just about guitarists 99% of the time). Are we gonna shun him too?
Sure, the BBC comment was misleading and Concha Buika isn't a flamenco singer (though I think she grew up with gitanos), but who gives a ****. There's actual offenders to worry about, all those idiots on Youtube giving "lessons" on steel string guitars and whatever. This wasn't worth a thread, and Ron's intent was just to sarcastically incite another of these discussions, like we just had in the Vicente thread, or a billion times before that.
Yes. Well what that hell. Dont confuse the fakemenco thing with actual flamencos going "offroad", like Poveda, Pitingo or Vicente, although latter just made it more pop like, and not really fusiony or offroadish (is that a word?). Although the result is often cheesy stuff (eg. PdL's Aranjuez (thats where i "EEWWWWW" )) the criticable point is a different one, and Ron was really just pointing out again the mislabeleing, nothing else. And he is simply right in doing so.
I can understand that musicians that have been playing flamenco at some point feel the need to explore new genres (and money/publicity too, i think Aranjuez made Paco more popular than say El Tempul or Sciroco). But only because they have been kick ass flamenco artists, that doesnt mean that all they do besides that must be good too.
I think Ron's pissy because it was promoted as flamenco. I think she is good, like Sade meets Cigala singing bolero in New Orleans.
But also kinda boring. I would like it if I was laying next to a beautiful naked woman with a bottle of wine, a time when clearly Agujetas or Terremoto por sigruirya would not get the job done.

Sarcasm is maliciously saying the opposite of what you mean. My post was straight worded. She has a good voice and I like her singing, but "flamenco queen" (their words not mine) seems like the usual casual use of the word "Flamenco" IMO.
These BBC producers and programme presenters have a habit of introducing practically anything from Spain as "Flamenco". I've heard it for years and years and yes, it does irritate me a bit. They are broadcasting to millions of people and have a duty to do a bit of research first before broadcasting these "facts" to a large and mainly uninformed audience.

Sounds pretty sarcastic to me. And your implication is clear. You don't think she's flamenco. Well maybe it's time to accept that though she never made 5 albums of pure tonos and siguiriyas, she most likely knows more about flamenco than all of us on this foro.
Concha was born in Majorca, but her parents came from Equatorial Guinea. She has a great voice and is highly regarded in Spain as an artist, but noone considers her flamenco.

Yet again, she probably has more of a clue about flamenco than any of the armchair elitists in this forum.
And of course, the question is, is someone "flamenco" or not if they know how to perform it, but choose not to most of the time? Like Nina Pastori. Or Pitingo. Or whoever. That description can apply to so many people it makes the whole discussion pointless.

Maybe you have the gift of hearing "flamenco" in anything Spanishy?

I already said the BBC remark was misleading. But couldn't you have posted the thread without the sarcastic remarks, so we could just appreciate the music for once? Even if it's not flamenco (God forbid)? Instead of trying to provoke the usual polemics on what constitutes flamenco and what doesn't?
lol am sorry i didnt see this post...i mean i saw the first vid, and you post i assumed it was gonna be one of those so stooped the vid a few minutes in....but in that last vid beno posted i love her !! i am not one for mixing of styles but she brings some cool stuff to it...and can sing flamenco too
