Is anyone else absolutely amazed by ...

Yesterday I was watching a show on youtube called "El Sol, La Sal, El Son". For some reason I didn't really like most of it that much with the exception of the dancers. This performance by Pastora Galvan in particular blew me away:

I think for a lot of us here, the guitar is our gateway into the flamenco world and we might not care for cante or baile all that much. That was certainly the case with me when I started. Over time though, I got used to the different style of singing but baile still wasn't something I really appreciated. Lately though I'm finding more and more dancers that I really like. I'm quite happy about this because I think I'm finally beginning to appreciate the art as a whole.

Regarding baile, I think that I was first impressed by the fancy footwork since I could see how it could be combined with guitar. The performance above though seems to revolve more around well...everything else except the footwork which for me makes it a first in that sense. I think it's just perfect in every way. Even the facial expressions set the mood so effectively.

Any thoughts above the performance? About baile and your appreciation thereof in general?

... well, this Bailadora is really GREAT!.....all the times I see her videos I go crazy!
I found Her baile skills very very sensual!.......she is a "passionate interpreter"... I love her!
...about baile in general, you are wright!.... it is a very intensive experience!

I wonder if they don´t have fashion-consulting in spain. She looks like she just came in from doing the laundry, and so she dances. Horrible. Eyecancer-dress + socks + shoes. Also makeup fail. Sexyness 0 out of 10. I see nothing special there beside I have no sound here atm.

But Spain isnt famous for good taste anyway... so.. never mind.

Hey don´t be mad about my opinion. U asked for it!

EDIT: Oh now I got headphones. I must say a little bit more enjoyable coz I can close my eyes and just listen but Im not that of a fan of this sloppy bulerias jamming either to be honest.

Ha... I don't think she's dressing in a standard sexy way ... She chose to dress like that :-)

If you want to learn about good taste, come to the South of Spain (Sevilla, cordoba,granada...) , eyyyy youve been there so you should know better ... Maybe you just need to make sure next time you come, you leave your black shoes, white socks and dungarees at home so you can make "good" friends :-).

Me too, but I think you expressed it better than I could.

Haha. I can't say I'm surprised by the comments. I'll admit that the dress is the first thing I noticed as well though I think it fits the performance perfectly. I don't think I've ever seen anyone looks so ridiculous and graceful at the same time.

This brings me to another point. Back when I was just discovering flamenco I kept reading about the different palos etc and I found that bulerias were often described as having a "mocking" tone to them. I never found this to be the case in most bulerias I listened to (eg. Paco, Tomatito) which sound very aggressive to my ear. This performance however definitely gives me that impression. I find it contrasts nicely with most performances I see that seem to have a very serious feel to them. Here on the other hand the best way I can describe this is that I feel like she is mocking the audience.

And for the record I do think she looks gorgeous

I would hardly describe this as sloppy bulerias jamming. Sure its simple to the ear..nothing fancy on first hearing but they have something that that the non spaniard cannot capture. That feel in the dance the song and the guitar is what flamenco is all about.

I posted a vid of this choregraphy time ago (maybe 1 year ago). Search for "pastora galvan" and you'll find the thread and some reactions to her way of dancing.

How she's dressed is part of the atmosphere she wants to transmit. Those who find her 'unsexy', get the thing. What they didn't understand is that was made on purpose.

For the sloppy jamming buleria and the non spaniard explanation
The flamenco is very vast and ways to enjoy it are many and varied. I can state firmly that the way I enjoy Flamenco is strongly different than doitsujin's. And vice versa...

This is how you come from the laundry. See 1:29 of this video. I like the "plonk" it on the ground bit

Yes you are probably right, it's to reenact an impromptu jam occurring after a long day of laundry.

....It is often called "Mediterranean sensuality" ....... of course is a mixture of cultures from the Arab, the North African and European countries bordering this sea.
Sure is different from the "barbie-style" to which we all are used in the last decades! :-))
.... she is a great Bailadora de flamenco.... able to captivate the audience even dressed as a laundry-lady!..... she is : GRANDIOSA! :-))

ciao,

For those who know Arabic, at 1:37 you can hear someone tell her, "Majdoobeh inti, nikti el decor!"

She is not dancing "normally". This is like an artisy impression of what a private juerga would be like....sort of.... As an artistic statement it is sort of interesting but it is NOT a fair representation of "normal" buleria dance improvisation. In a way she is making fun of it making fun of the way old fat ladies in jerez dance, at the same time doing it correct, if that makes sense. Honestly the nerdy outfit and exaggerated make-up have the reverse effect, especially that spot where she shakes her butt 3:10 a thing that is supposed to be funny and anti sexy and I was sprung like sir-mix-a-lot.

She came to the US maybe 10-12 years ago with her dad and did a workshop. I got to play for her in it and got to play for her dad briefly too -he was singing. It was pretty freakin cool. She can dance her butt off in any style you want. As far as her appeal, any lady that can dance as well as her is hot IMO.
I'm not amazed by the vid above, I like the feet working, but am by her regular dancing.

Yeah, ...but she shouldn´t do it. :P Nobody wanna see that.

But to be honest...I don´t really care. As mezzo stated precisely. There are many different ways to enjoy flamenco. I would enjoy a half naked playmate doing improvisation on bulerias much more than that. She wouldn´t even have to do bulerias...just being there would be enough to fill my heart with more joy than this laundry lady does. Personal taste are the keywords. :P haha

But nice discussion. Sometimes it needs drastic statements to germinate a fruitful discussion.. :>

That's exactly how I felt about it. You just explained it a lot better than I could.
