STRING HEIGHT

When measuring string height at the 12th fret do you measure from the wood of the fret
or on top of the actual fret divider. What is good string height for flamenco. Should there be a specific height of the string between the sound hole and bridge as well, ive heard
this height is important as well.

One other mesure that someone told me it is important is when one depress the 6th string at the 3rd fret there should be some specific height above the 1rst fret.
These are good questions for luthiers

You always meassure from the fret. There are various fret heights, so it doesn´t do any good to meassure from the wood.

A good standard height is around 3 - 3,1mm at the 12th fret. Some people play so hard that they need a higher action and some so soft that they can do with 2,5 - 2,8mm. Also some like a lot of buzzing while some hate it, so it's personal.

A good height at the bridge is 7 - 9mm and at the soundhole 7 - 10mm. These meassurements in order to make it possible to play with the very flat tecnique, where you touch the soundboard more or less all the time.

When you depress, the strings at the 3rd fret, there should be a tiny wheeny gap between the string and the 1st fret. If not, the guitar'll buzz at the first fret which is very annoying.

Hope this helps.

Un saludo
Anders

Hi Anders, I was reading your web page more carefully on my night shift, and I realized the awnsers I was looking for are on your web page. Your guitars look impressive, wish I was rich and go on a flamenco guitar rampage. Thanks for the reply.

Hi Nando

No problem. I don't expect everyone to read my webpage all the time. And the foro is exactly for that. I'm planning to make more info pages in the future.

Hi Nando
That is correct. I live in Algarve
Anders
Thanks for the information. I tried to measure this gap. One sheet of common paper (A4 for printing) passes between the fret (1st) and the string without touching it; 2 sheets glued together already touches. Is this Ok or too narrow?
Regards
Antonio

Antonio, It could be OK if the relief is correct. The most important is that the string doesn't buzz more played open than when fretted.
