Recommend me some Gypsy King albums

Any recommendation?

For some reason, their rumbas doesnt do anything for me (in fact I think it sounds really cheesy) but then again, I've heard only few songs from them.

I know they can play well because I remembered they played a Bulerias and it was pretty impressive.

Mosaique is the one with a bulerias, and its by far their best work.

I've listened to just about all of them and I can really only highly recommend two of their CDs.

1) Allegria - this is a combination of two early french releases, "Allegria" and "Luna Del Fuego". No synths, no percussion outside of golpes and palmas, plenty of jaleos and outstanding playing. Basically, none of the cheesy over-production is there which allows you to realize just how good these guys are. A lot of these songs were re-recorded in the following years and released on their major-label albums. Almost every one of those later recordings are inferior to these. One of my favorite CDs of any genre.

2) Roots - Similer to Allegria but with less of the spontaneous party feel of "Allegria". They branch out a bit more here. There's a Gyspsy Swing track and what sounds like a mandola on another song.

Most of the rest of their output is almost unlistenable (to me) because of the sappy production that is akin to modern American country music.

That's two votes for "Mosaique" being the best GK release. Maybe I need to give it another try. I remember the buleria and didn't think it was significant other than it's a rare GK non-rumba. The opening track, "Caminando por la calle" is great song but I it has that reverb washed sound and a wood block that sounds pretty cheesy. The version of "Veinto Del Arena" on the "Allegria" CD is one of my favorite tracks. On "Mosaique" it has cheesy samples of wind blowing, sci fi synth sounds and heavy pounding trance drums. I'm going to pop the CD back in and give it another shot. Seriously guys, what am I missing here?

I think thats a bit splitting hairs, considering we are talking about mostly pop music and rumbas here. Most of it is "cheesy" music if you want (all albums). If the fact that they have one buleria among billions of rumbas doesnt make it significant then i dont know LOL! But there were also other tracks i liked on Mosaique such as bossamba and liberte. Definitely one of their better rumbas IMO.

Yeah, you're right, it is rumba pop, after all. However, I happen to love rumbas when played with traditional instrumentation. I love the sound of slapping the **** out of a guitar. :0

My sister has one of those Putamayo compilations called "Mediterranean Odyssey". It has a very rough rumba gitano on it by a group called Tekameli. Sounds great and it's just guitars, palmas, stomping and vocals. Sounds like a party.
