Wonderful Buleria Arash, but what makes you want to draw a parallel with Gerardo Nunez? De Pura's style seems quite different, maybe not as refined as Nunez, wouldn't you say.
I mean, there are (must) be a number of apparently under-appreciated flamencos out there, but what makes the few that are widely appreciated is that addtional "quid" which defines their own distinctive style.

Well, i wrote "technically" at the same level. Because Gerardo is known as one of the guitarists with the best technique. Therefore i mentioned Gerardo. I dont see a parallel in the "style" between them either though.
But i think Nino de Pura has also a distinctive style. I have all his CDs and i think he has some very nice ideas and compositions and something special which is , well, "Nino de Pura" ...... and i would be happy to see and hear more from him.

I really enjoyed the bulerias - very jaunty, and I like how it flowed freely into different styles (technically beginners/intermediates could learn a lot from studying his right hand).
Maybe my imagination but does he permit himself a tiny smile at about 3.25 when he pulls off a speedy smooth picado ? :)

Arash, I couldn't agree with you more - he is a great technician. His "Desde mi Giralda" solea is sublime.
Personally, I think that some players exemplify "technique in the service of technique (to the impoverishment of art)". Nino de Pura insn't one of those players.
Another highly underrated player is Manolo Franco. He is has stupendous technique. The acid test for any flamenco player is his guajiras. Not many can play that! I have tried and bruised my pride. He has been criticized as sounding too classical (ie not flamenco enough. This criticism doesn't resonate with me. He has some beautiful ideas and enviable technique. All hail the mighty professor!" I'd be interested to know what Todd K thinks of Manolo Franco.

I like his playing and some of the more fiery stuff, but some of his compositions veer dangerously close to elevator music territory (IMHO). Maybe that's a reason.

p.s. i agree about Manolo Franco too. He is also a very good guitarist.

You guys know that Niño de Pura and Manolo Franco are a guitar duo?
Apart from their seperate projects the have been doing gigs together for many years. They are playing in the circuito Andalaluz this year and have at least 3 or gigs coming up. I know they have a gig in malaga theatre this month. Here is an Alegria (starts around 1.50)

I saw Nino de Pura together with Manolo Franco 3-4 years ago here at my place. He already performed the compositions from pozo y caudal. Good player! But he plays too much picado...

He's on Pansequito's "A mi bahía" from 2001. It's an excellent recording, although there are tracks with drum machines, multi-tracked guitars, etc. Smart arrangements, great accompaniment, controlled virtuosity... It's meant to be a commercial version of bay-area flamenco, so it's a bit light but still very satisfying, and not just because Panseco is such a great singer. Niño de Pura has definitely got a lot of talent.

Well, yes it is too much from compositional point of view,,,,, insanely difficult from technical point of view though! (this is good if you want to loose some weight or would like to have this tendovaginitis as soon as possible, i suppose)
btw, i like Pansequitos voice very much. he is a great singer. I also like his Album "Como los gitanos eramos" with Tomatito. The only think i dont like is that always 2 guitars are recorded over eachother...this makes it too "busy"
