Server Outage

Our hosters just demonstrated that they do not have any fail-over or disaster recovery process. An aircon unit went down in one of their data centres but they could not switch us to the other centre.

I know enough about this game to be cancelling our contract and moving us again.

Sorry.

Does that mean that post some kind of disaster, all the data and posts would be lost for ever? Or that we would temporarily be unable to access the site?

You do a great job here Simon. I'm also a member of a few other forums, and although they are also very popular, I often come across issues when using them. Everything from being unable to access to receiving pop up warnings from my computer. This foro is always very smooth.

I was paying for reliability and disaster recovery. In this case, if they could not have fixed it - everything would have been lost, and they would have breached their contract. So, I will not be paying for that crap anymore and will make my own disaster recovery plan with a new host.

Basically, I have being working harder and paying more to cover for lots of shysters doing less over the years Trouble is, you won't find out unless you are experienced in the industry and even then, it might be too late.

You would think that these providers would be stresses out knowing that they are charging for a service that they can't provide and guarantee. perhaps you are entitled to a refund?

I understand what you mean here , and this is why so many of us appreciate what you are doing here , the only thing that you really dont want to lose is Members , everything else can be re-done ,,.....

Just want to add my appreciation for the efforts being made to maintain this site.

People think things just happen but there's always someone (or a group of someones) behind the scenes making it all tick over.

Would it be feasible to use an online backup service like Carbonite. All data remains on their servers, so even if the site crashes and your host loses everything, it is all recoverable from Carbonite's servers.

I use Carbonite to back up my PC, and it's only fifty dollars a year. And that's for unlimited space. I don't know if they have a separate plan for business, but I breathe easy knowing that my data is safely stored apart from my IP's servers.

That's the kind of thing I am looking at. Replicating to a back-up server and switch the DNS in an outage.

Many thanks for running the Foro, Simon. It's a wonderful service. Larisa and I are doing a New York City weekend,
so I didn't notice the outage. No flamenco, but we had dinner at a nice bistro on the upper west side with a great classical gtarist.

Next company you work with for hosting, might be good to make it clear to them you have a world wide network of emotional gypsy types that have no problems what so ever hunting down geeks in the real physical world to have vengence for any lost data....they may take extra care when hosting THIS site.
