You can study all you want, but that is really the flamencologists job.

I didnt mean becoming anal about it, but it adds to the enjoyment (stress release) knowing some old classics. Like when i first heard the original recordings whith chacón, it felt real familiar because ive heard different versions of his things before done by other singers.

But of course its different doing it, and as you say being focused on the expression of the singer is more important in a real situation than knowing exactly where the letra came from.

I think what you and romerito are saying, going to spain, study cante and work with good singers, are all good points and necessary steps to take.

Rome,
not much a flamenco scene in Boulder, huh? I was just there this year for my wife's friend's graduation (PhD in Philosophy for some reason). It seems like a pretty artsy town... we were at the Russian Tea Room and lots of weirdos were outside playing music and juggling and what not :)

I'm in a similar position, although I don't understand how you CAN do that all night thing without waking everyone up? Do you have a soundproof basement or something?

Yeah that is why I bought a big sub-burban house and have roomates that are into flamenco and dont' complain much. But also, you have to learn how to grow a thick skin and ingore the yelling and wall banging. My favorite though "do you take requests Ricardo?.........SHUT UP!".

Actually the bank loaned me the money, now I have to pay them back! Roomates help. I do gigs at night so I have the day to spend with family. My wife dances a little, but now adays she is into acting. But I dont' really get to practice much. Mainly when I am teaching a student and playing slow and repetative, that is good practice. Hey, I get PAID to practice!

My problem is trying to find the time to actually listen to flamenco. If I'm not practising, I'm either sleeping or at work. When I was back in Canada hating traffic jams at least that gave me time to listen to music!
