Guitar Teachers

I'm looking for a good teacher in the West Los Angeles area. Does anyone have a recommendation?

hey im in west LA too!
i study with stephan dick, hes a nice guy and knows ALOT, and he studied with manolo and rubichi, but hes in south pasadena, by the rosebowl:

also adam del monte lives in the area as well, but im not sure if he teaches (Except at usc, boo to that)

paco arroyo teaches out of glendale (hes a pseudo regular at the fountain theatre)

also, im sure you could go to el cid and arrange something with one their regulars too...

Thanks for the info. I'll check out his website. I had a couple of lessons with Adam, I think that he was way out in Temple City or somewhere near there. I also tried Guillermo Rios, he was in Camarillo that was about an hours drive, too far. It's too bad there's no one in Santa Monica, Venice, Culver City or even the S. Bay.

ha! steves last name was edited bc of its double entandra meaning..? perhaps, rainman, you could do some investigating on the guitar salon forum, which is in santa monica...and ask if there are any teachers in santa monica...worth giving it a shot, and if there happens to be a teacher in the west side, please do let me know!

dave tate at GSI is supposed to be a monster flamenco player and teaches in santa monica.

leonard read, the guy who recorded the flamenco sound files on GSI's site, also teaches in LA somewhere. dave tate is friends with him and can point you in the right direction.

also, isn't there a new teacher at art valdez's store on sunset? i talked to him a while ago and he said he had to be convinced to come out of retirement to teach. art said he was seriously old school and muy flamenco. if he is still around, i'll be trying him out soon.

let us know what you find out.

yea i completely forgot about valdez, i was speaking with him about a month ago about his new teacher, i forget the guys names though, however, the only problem with valdez is what he charges, isnt something like $60 for 30min? then again, valdez claims that this guy knows his stuff and that he is "world renowned"...

oh and armand, g.v. rubio's sales manager, teaches out of rubio's workshop on west adams.

holy nuts, does he charge that much? that's ridiculous. have you heard art play? he's got some serious chops too.

yeah art is pretty wild, real old school...im sure hes shown u his $16K palo escrito, with his patented left hand grip..?
u know theres another guy on robertson, close by the 10, who teaches flamenco/classical out of his framing shop, hes a persian guy i think...i always see his sign advertising the lessons, but havent heard him play

ha ha, you've been everywhere too then. i visited that guy on robertson, he's a great great guy but not a flamenco player at all.

you ever try out shiro at valdez? he's a monster classical player and a really good flamenco player too but i definitely want someone who is flamenco through and through. he was $35/half hour which is nuts but i live only a few blocks away so it was convenient. my first six months of flamenco lessons were with him which i think was a good start.

i also have two reccomendations of two guys near signal hill. if you pm me, i'll send you their phone numbers.

thanks, but im happy with steve, hes pretty reasonable $200 for 4 lessons, and he gives u a cd recording of the lesson, so u can refer back to it...and he teaches with/for dancers, so the students can participate in accompaniment. im pretty keen to the whole expierence..

actually i just started, like a month or so ago...i was on hiatus with guitar because of school...but i use to study with terry toney (or his stage name, antonio duran) in mission viejo, and he really knew his stuff...he studied with diego del gastor for a while, and was a regular at cid back in the 70s...
nice website too, i take pictures as well, i rock it with the semi-old school camera, f5

$35 for a half hour is nuts? I don't understand, most musicians around here charge $100/hour to play, so why would $35/half hour be crazy money for teaching? Maybe LA has a quite different market?

My teacher charges £30 ($55 or 45 Euros) per one hour lesson. I think this is quite expensive, but he is a good player and a good teacher. It does mean I can't afford lessons as often as I'd like. But when I do have a lesson its packed full of useful stuff with any examples backed up on cassette. I guess the amount a teacher charges might be dependent on how good he is, and how much demand there is for his services.

Hm, I don't think you can compare prices on an international level. life is more expensive in LA then for instance in Holland. Not to speak of Poland or Yugoslavia.

well, most of the teachers i have encountered (in southern cal) charge about $50, sometimes $60/hr...and with regards to the teachers that do the $100/hr gigs, within that hour, the audience can get 4-7 pieces of music, juxtaposed to MAYBE 2 compas' that is taught with a one hr lesson, so i think $35 for half an hr is way too much, unless, of course, its paco de lucia, then that would be a deal!
