RE: New Vicente Amigo album (in reply to metalhead

quote:

what's the big deal in borrowing compas phrases?

In particular, his “style” of compas is what he is known for, and I was pointing out the irony that much of what people think is his unique thing is literally as I said…slow groovy Paco phrases note for note. The falsetas have the same types of phrasing and concept as Paco’s, I am not going to hold your hand falseta by falseta. But to get technical only B was a compas expression, A is a chordal remate, and neither of the last two C and D in that thread are “compas”, as in how you strum basic rhythm…they are rhythmic falsetas, note for note, deliberate quotations.

Just start paying attention is all. And that was ONLY bulerias…other palos might be more obvious. Compare that stuff to say his Siguiriyas where he imitates his Uncle. He sounds MORE like Paco to me than when he tries to do his Uncle’s thing. In fact that Paco siguiriyas I showed sounds more like his Uncle than Moraito is doing (probably because Paco was young). Point being Moraito stylistically is informed by mature paco material. Much like Enrique del Melchor vs his Dad.

I always enjoyed a vicente amigo music video.

Anyone seen the maestro sanlucar one? Where's he chasing some young girl about on a horse? 🤯

That said, I've been always wondering why he never released any live albums (except Cordoba DVD, but no CD

Interesting, I never even noticed that! Maybe because his live concerts are mostly just whats on his album? Thinking Paco band live vs a paco album..

Stu, oh yeah I know that one! So romantic lol

Yeah, could be, although I think it should not matter that much.
Now that I think, very few of the flamenco guitar players have live album (if I am not mistaken neither Tomatito or Gerardo have one).

It is not a normal thing, and the only reason Paco made live recordings is because they book end the studio periods and we can see glimpses of the evolution he was promoting. Vicente’s live show DVD is ALREADY a rare thing. No need from ANY flamenco player to do this thing. I see Paco’s recording career as two albums or so, then live, because you need at least that many to see the full range of palo development. Fabulosa/fantasia and then the live in Germany Fiesta Flamenca. Then Recital (an odd one with 6 guitars)/Duende/Fuente with live in Teatro Real. Next Almoraima/Castro Marin/Solo Quiero Caminar, live in San Fran is an off set however the new Saturday shows the two solos that are part of the rep and honestly, his best performances of either. The live Sextet is a transition to Siroco/Zyrab, and live in America shows the evolution of the those two. Finally, Luzia/Cositas and the final Spain concerts of that material.

I hate all the three singles he recently released. But I've learned over the years that if I give these records a chance they have the potential to eventually grow on me. I wasn't a fan of Paseo de Gracia or Tierra either, but learned to appreciate the little gems hidden there.

Our Vicente nerd-in-chief is already on it:

This is also a kindly reminder to Ramzi that I'm still winning.

Yesterday youtube algorithm sent me this tune from the 70s. Great stuff.
Why am I enjoying it more than these new solo flamenco guitar albums?

I have nothing negative to say about it, I love his early work, he is a true master. From then onward he may do whatever he likes. The only thing that gets on my nerves is when stuff like Roma came out and people went ape shyte over it like it was overshadowing his previous material. Again, Vivencias and his album with Jose Merce are unsurpassed by any artist.

Roma also reached classical audience , people that have no interest in flamenco enjoyed listen and play Roma.

Vivencias is great , genius trumpet and mixing , also the Merce record
