Broken thumbnail repair

I broke my right thumbnail again, it also seems thinner weaker than my left thumbnail. I was growing my left thumbnail to compare.

So I cut my left thumbnail tip off, superglued it to my right thumbnail, superglued a piece of muslin over it all, gave it another coat of superglue. Let it dry and then filed it smooth and polished it. It's held up perfectly for a week, and sounds and feels really good.

I will grow my left thumbnail as a feeder from now on :D

I read this in a science fiction novel once… the space Guitano kept a jar full of thumbs and fingers growing. At each space jump he would sleep for about a month and the fingernails would grow to full length and ready for each new galactic gerga…

RE: Broken thumbnail repair (in reply to silddx

Had to dig around for these fotos, sheet music once and carbon fiber too

The CF was a cut off strip about 3/4” wide from a full depth neck reinforcement, I saw it there on the bench, grabbed a piece of pipe I had laying around of a suitable diameter and laid it along and wrapped with tape. Think I had it on the bench for a couple months before I had a need, think I blew off my index nail, and just did the whole set.

Silddx, why not use the instant nail sheets from guitar player nails. They have 2 thicknesses, I get the thicker for my thumb. Works great.

My last application of it remained 3 weeks🥳. Rough side gets the glue.

Silddx, straight from the horses mouth.... International shipping is only $14.95 pre formed nails weren't good for me they're all kind of too big. the strips were much easier. they have two thicknesses I guess you can call London guitar studio and ask what's in it or maybe it's on their website cheers from Phoenix.

Hey David.
No, they're not. Our kits are available from London Guitar Studios, but you have to get the whole kit.
But we ship all over the place. Our international shipping isn't too expensive. We actually pay some of it ourselves.

Thanks,
Dave

Ahh, thanks for that, Dave. I will do that then.

Never been to Phoenix, but I spent a little time in Tucson at the turn of the new millennium.

Thanks again,
Nigel

Beware ordering stuff from the USA (or anywhere else in the world, post-brexit), if the value of the shipment and shipping charge combined is more than £15 you will pay VAT on top (20%?) plus the Post Office handling charge of £8.

Have you tried silk wraps and brush-on nail glue (superglue)? They shouldn't break...

how are you breaking your thumbnail? One of the key skills for any budding flamenco guitarist is learning to avoid breaking your nails!

I have used lots of different things over the years, including silk and glue, glue and acrylic powder, and even rizla papers and glue! Mostly I just use a few layers of brush-on nail (super) glue, but keep some acrylic powder in case I need to fill a chip really fast (it dries more or less instantly), and some silk wraps in case I break a nail. The glue often gets chipped or cracked but I haven't actually broken a nail for years.

Thank you.

My nails are generally ok, but I can be careless when doing chores, gardening, generally enjoyment activities, etc. I need to make the occasional repair.

I have ordered the Guitar Player Nails ii sheet.

I've been trying the guitar player nails over the past 6 weeks. Didn't work for me, so I have gone back to muslin and superglue. Thanks for the suggestion though, Dave.

RE: Broken thumbnail repair (in reply to silddx

I have used all the repair options at one time or another. I studied with Pepe Haro for a few years, a guitarist from Madrid, who used nothing on his nails. I asked him how he played for dance with no additional protection and he said "Like this!" and played some loud ras.

I think it's mostly technique failures that break nails when playing but if you play a lot, even good technique might not be foolproof. Also, as you mentioned, it usually happens doing other stuff.

Since I don't gig anymore, if I break one, no biggie-I just keep playing.

For those using acrylic, I did as well but developed a fungus under my thumb nail and had no thumb nail for two years. It took a pill from the doc to finally cure it.

Thumb is the worst.
Lost my middle finger nail recently so been playing lot of thumb heavy stuff.it's been cool.
I never seen to break nails while playing. Only while doing manual work without a glove or catching it on something. Something slipping from my group etc.

Maybe I'm not playing hard enough. grrr. We need a blood soaked thumb photo ricardo! 😀

RE: Broken thumbnail repair (in reply to silddx

Playing, weakens the exposed part of the nail which grows out later too thin. You need to cover the entire nail with glue and wear off the glue playing rather than wear down that exposed nail material. That is the main point of using glue….as the front line layer that wears from strumming so the normal nail underneath remains thick when it grows out. The normal nail thickness plus glue allows you to slam your nails into stuff all the time that produces minor chipping that can be filed out before next playing sessions. As the nails grow, a gap forms behind the glue line that you can simply fill in. Never scrape any glue off, it comes off on its own.

RE: Broken thumbnail repair (in reply to silddx

On the rare occasion it occurs…this:

That is two-ply paper towel, which soaks up the glue quickly and dries very hard. If this fake thing lasts a week, good idea to CAREFULLY remove it. Normally it comes off on its own. Just like when glue itself flakes off with dead skin cells. 1 Week is usually enough time to start getting the real nail working again, whatever was left of it. I just need to get through this weekend.
