As to her competence as a cantaora, here is a Caña, fairly orthodox, just she is weak expressively compared to majority of professionals. Everything negative about her career has to do with taste mainly. People that claim she is a “good” flamenco singer probably don’t really know how to judge a performance such as this one, which is simply “she could get the job done”, the best of her abilities allow.

Ottmar, it say’s Nouveau Flamenco- no lie’s detected. He’s a rumba player and rumba is a sub genre of flamenco. At this point he’s our Carlos Montoya…
Would listen to it? Probably not, but he’s not being untrue about what he does. He probably can’t hold down the guitar chair in a quadro of grown up dancers who are not holding back. But neither could a lot oh guys who play sevillanas in the casetas at Féria and Sevillanas is still part of flamenco.

Well then maybe this was all for naught. Maybe there’s nothing flamenco about Rosalia and I just was on about nothing.

Ooh, I’ll jump in.
Ask yourself first, do you watch your favorite flamenco artest or listen?
I get it a rare few of you get to watch but the rest of us payos use iTunes or vinal, I can’t stand uTube so I don’t.

I prefer my flamenco guitar spicy, doesn't have to be fast, should have some meat on the bones, can be raw or well done, as long as it doesn't sound like it's turning green on an elevator floor.

Pat Methane: I always liked his James tune. This live version with Michael Brecker. Great early nineties nostalgia.
But Ive never been a huge fan. Always thought he was high on the horse, with his "No one record my live performances. My Improv is only for the time and place in the moment" or, is there another reason Pat?

No, it's much worse than you think. I was invited to play with him at a club called sol y luna in the 90's. They had a quadro playing that night and the guitarist was Don F. You probably remember him. He was a solid player, and as I sat listening to him I thought he was as good as anyone playing flamenco in the bay area at that time. Way beyond my skills at least.
After their set, the owner invited me to jam with Don and Ottmar, which I did. We played a few of Ottmar's tunes to the delight of the audience. He was at his peak of popularity at that time. They were easy to pick up on the fly-mostly two chord vamps, then a third chord for the chorus.
Then the ladies in the quadro joined us and started doing palmas por bulerias. I looked at Don and he looked at me and I believe the thought that passed between us was "he's the famous one, let him play" And he did. Total train wreak. Zero compas, no understanding of the form whatsoever.
Over the years since then I thought, given his situation, he'd study some and pick it up so that at least he wouldn't fall on his face like he did that night. I mean, I've had a few horrible moments onstage that led to a lot of practice. Based on videos it seems that didn't happen. You can call it rumba all you want but when you call your breakout record "New Flamenco" I think you have a responsiblity to know some flamenco. I'd rather listen to Rosalia.

ottmar liebert cringes the sh!t out of me. i'd rather hear rosalia howl honestly 😂 the worst thing is that oblivious cologners (i'm from cologne myself) believe that ottmar liebert is cologne's ambassador on flamenco 😭
