ORIGINAL: Filip Would be awesome but I haven't seen anything about a DVD. That's another topic, Youtube is fine but there has been no DVDs since 1996 concert, and in general there are only a couple of Paco's concerts on DVDs sadly. The 2010 box had a documentary with live footage (live in Spain), La Busqueda had footage, and then the live concert with Mclaughlin (from 1987, however it was new in 2016). YouTube and other streaming services are delivering higher quality video that people can watch on their big flat screen TV, than the old DVDs anyway, and so this convenience has derailed the DVD industry, so only some old fashioned guys like us still like that. I rarely sell my CD any more as even old people ask me “how can I play this? Even my computer doesn’t have a CD drive”. One lady was about to hand me cash for a CD then found it on Spotify on her phone and put her cash away. So DVD is simply a waste of money to produce for such a small market. My frustration is those Montreux shows on YouTube are only half the show, and the boring half at that. It is ironic that people that produce those shows seem to think the full band portion is the main part of the flamenco gig, when actually, Paco is just doing that to fill the time. One thing I have often thought about is that if a flamenco guitarist is asked to play solo, and plays every palo, the concert is only like 45 min. So we have to repeat palos to do a two hour concert with intermission. Paco uses that second half of his show to do mixed medley of his famous tunes (mostly rumbas), feature the token dance portion, and finally do his jazz fusion Zyryab (Meeting of the Spirits throwback). Of course he enjoys to play that way, it is way more relaxing than the difficult first part, but any gigging musician knows it is filler.

ORIGINAL: xirdneH_imiJ The alegría (Calle Munición, NOT La Barrosa) is played waaay too fast. I wonder if he opted for his tempo or was just a victim of his rhythm section. El Tesorillo is a tiento he has on Cositas Buenas, so why the heck name this bulería that. Then the minera is actually rondeña. It's so embarrassing, nobody with any knowledge of Paco's work could've overseen at least these little details? Thankfully while there are some gems on the disc, we have so many performances of his available on YouTube and other sources. The Alegrias is the mixture version he adapts at some point. Meaning he does use the last two variations of La Barrosa and the single string picado. If you notice by the time they get there they slow down a bit whatever happened early on (yes it takes off too soon from the tempo he marks). About song titles. Obviously when paco toured with the sextet, he is asked to provide song titles, and in the case of when recordings are made they want titles that copyright works for as well (licensing). Since he probably gave up explaining what a flamenco song form is, he tosses out titles we are familiar with “soniquete”, etc., long before heading out the door, much less before deciding what to play on a specific night. The only one that ever stuck was “Zyryab” for some reason. Since his death, they probably went by old paper programs (if you ever attended a PDL concert you know what I mean, that is a fault of whoever prints up those programs on the computer and makes the bio etc.,), and when they couldn’t understand, they went by previous album titles. I would say most of the attempts here are in the ballpark so to speak. And to be fair, I see this on old vinyl just as much, including Sabicas etc.

All right, so I finished the Montreux years and overall I think the album is pretty awesome. It has quite good audio, a few new songs not seen before on live CDs, and even the ones we already have on other live CDs are quite refreshing. There are mistakes of course but I personally don't mind them, I actually think they make the whole album more "real" in a sense. I'm definitely not just getting both the CD and the vinyl soon, but will listen to it regularly. quote:
I would as well like the last bulerias version more, but...I am convinced that there is a recording of that version which was made during the recording of the last live Conciertos España album, and I am also convinced that it will come out eventually (maybe wishful thinking but well), so in a way I think it's good for having 2006 bulerias here because otherwise we would never have it on a CD. Paying more attention to this and the years of Montreux concerts, actually I see there is a 2012 recording with that amazing bulerias as well, too bad both of them haven't finished on the album actually I guess I'm gonna have to stick with the audio I extracted from Jazztage 2010, which is pretty good actually. P.S. Btw, except from 2004 Burgausen concert, is there any decent video (or audio) of solo buerias from 2004-2010 period

No worries, I found it on an old IPad that was not upgraded. I just have to figure out how to move the file. All right, cool. quote:
I finally listened to the entire disc, and was thinking no solea on here, but then I heard the end of Zyryab. I forgot how much I liked Chonchi singing. That pretty much makes the album. Was it Montse Cortes (wtitting this from memory without listening again)? Anyway, female singing made my day as well, I always wanted a live album with female cante...my fav concert was with Chonchi, Montse and Duquende in Belgrade. This reminds me btw, I have an audio recording of a Frejus concert with female cante, buried somewhere on a hdd, I'll dig it out when I get home.
