Tom,
You mention "string pop" here and there and I'm guessing you are describing the strings hitting the frets with a strong right hand hit? I used the search function here but didn't find anything specific. Is it somthing you look for in a low action Flamenco? I think you mention upthread some you thin a sound bar/brace when you don't get the "pop" you are looking for?

Congrats on completing your Rayes. I bet you have another guitar or two yet to build and looking forward to your build threads.

Actually, I shape the braces with more polishing to get the right tension, tone, and articulation for the right and left hand techniques. The string pop would come with the action being lower.

String pop comes by playing with a strong right hand on my current build.

Juan Maya Marote, a Spanish player, used to order his guitars with a slightly convex fingerboard, to get that certain pop to his music. But the norm today is a cleaner sound.

I remember Paco del Gastor and Juan Maya playing at the La Zambra nite club in 1965 when I studied flamenco. Paco was my teacher for new material that I used for performance when I returned to Dallas Texas in the 60's.

I remember the Conde guitar that Marote loaned Paco to cut a record with. It was phenomenal, with just the right pop! Paco actually let me play it........what a treasure!

I had planned to write more about Tom Blackshear’s latest Reyes model before taking off for Florida today, but last week got busier than I anticipated. When I get back to Austin after the first of the year I will play it some more, and compare it to other guitars.

For now I can say I am very happy with Tom’s guitar. I think it will turn out to be a fine instrument for both flamenco and classical.

More later,

RNJ

Well, my Doctor is pressing me to do more Chemo for about 6 months.

2 days a month doesn't sound like a big deal, so I'll try to honor my idea to build the 1968 Conde style.

I'm still toying around with the type woods I'll use but the basic design will stay close to the original pattern.

This last Reyes pattern I built was a total walk away with my building skills so I'd be very interested to hear how she is aging.

I finally found the mother load of the past tutorial I did with the 68 Conde style and I'll post it here again. The big difference from the last one will be that the fan braces will go to the original sizes but with some fine tuning on the older pyramid style.

This is the URL for the past tutorial in full, so when I get into the new video I will try and explain in more detail about the change back to the original braces size and fine tuning.
