Salut malin819,

Did anyone try one of the other courses of this website, for instance serranos tientos or alegrias courses? any recommendations or new reviews?

I noticed this Paco Serrano DVD from a few years ago:

http://www.foroflamenco.com/tm.asp?m=209248&appid=&p=&mpage=1&key=serrano&tmode=&smode=&s=#209329

Is that still worthwhile?

Yes it’s good; but the DVD is (or was, at the time I got my copy) PAL only, so you’ll need an international DVD player.

Paco’s web-site seems to have disappeared; but take a look at his Facebook page, there are some videos on there:

I liked the look of some of the online stuff with the atrafana school. Ive looked at some of his tabs and videos and he seems to have an interesting method. Seems reasonably priced, with achievable goals. Anyone tried it ?

The Atrafana stuff is great for what it is. Lots of concise, technical exercises. His videos are barebones - he demonstrates and provides guidance by text. No speaking. It does the job. I have his full Flamenco Guitar Method pack. Lots of good chops building stuff especially for beginners.

I also have a subscription to SpanishGuitarSchool.com which I am finding pretty good for a beginner to work through. I should be through it soon.

I also have a course I got from Udemy by Rob Collomb. It was amazingly just $29. It's OK. Nothing special.

I bought the Fundamentals of Solea course on OnlineFlamenco.net and it is just awesome. Tino is a fantastic teacher and the production quality is great. Even with having to use the English subtitles it beats everything else I've been using although it's not necessarily a replacement but rather complementary.

Right I am working through a combination of Atrafana, SpanishGuitarSchool.com and the OnlineFlamenco.net Solea course. All are quite complementary. What I've found so far is you get what you pay for with this stuff.

RE: New online flamenco teaching website (in reply to benros

A lot of it is insanely difficult and hard on the left hand. You know that solea one he has in the first workshop that just kills your left hand? It's like that except worse.
There's nothing special about these exercices for the right hand really. He just adds that additional layer of difficulty on the left hand with extensive stretches and bar chords. In one of the arppegio exercices, you're somehow supposed to hold a bar chord on the second fret, play that F# bass note, while also playing the high B (1st string 7th fret). If you're looking to develop right hand technique, I honestly wouldn't bother with it. But for left hand strength and flexibility it's definitely a challenge.

I guess the upside is that his exercices tend to be pretty musical. So it's nice to feel like you're playing music and not just repetitive exercices. But yeah tbh it's not really suitable for me either at this point. I try them out from time to time but I don't think I'll be able to incorporate them into my routine just yet. The first one was more accessible.

Hi all,

Question for those of you who have purchased courses from onlineflamenco.net
Have they recently put their prices SIGNIFICANTLY up or am I mistaken?!
I remember Tino's Buleria course for instance used to be around 60 Euros (last June); it is now 397 Euros!!

Is this right or am I mistaken?
How much did you pay if you don't mind me asking.

Thanks,
A

You're right. I paid 65 euros for the Javier Conde one.
It's excellent material, but definitely not worth 400 euros…
I'm almost tempted to say it's a glitch or something.

The put the prices up last week or so. The old price was 65 euros for each workshop, now its 397 (they offered to buy all courses together for 290 euros for 24 hours, before they raised the price).

Wow. I was hoping it was a glitch but apparently they're just insane.
It's great material but definitively not worth that price, not even half that price.

RE: New online flamenco teaching website (in reply to Piwin

if i'm being honest, a 5 hr masterclass with any flamenco teacher which usually runs in around 200euro is pretty good, i've seen private flamenco lessons vary from 15euro up to 85euro per hour.

If the material is good and well organised, then i think its worth 200euro. But like everything, quality varies, some flamenco courses ive paid 150euro and got a tonne of video/audio recorded which i can work out in my own time, others ive paid 250euro and got some material but not what i had wanted...

again its perspective, but 397euro is a lot of money, likewise with online courses if it goes out of business or the website shuts down thats 397euro gone down the drain, and with this type of marketing strategy this could be the case.

I took advantage of that deal. Now I just need ten hours a day to work it......really a great value. Been working on Conde's tech stuff-it's tough.

That's what I'm worried about: that they're just going to shut down. I've downloaded all the PDFs but I'm not computer-savvy enough to figure out how to download the videos (if it's even possible).

There are ways even if an actual video download is not possible, but I'd try download first, and if that does not work, screen recorder second. PM me if interested in details.

standard practice for such business going down would be to notify their users in advance and make available all content, bought by the user, downloadable as files. I hope they do that.

Dear guitarristas,

Please note that we're currently updating the content library of Online Flamenco together with the whole infrastructure , so please don't worry about the website shutting down and leaving the users without the content.

Feel free to write us if you have any questions.

Gracias!

RE: New online flamenco teaching website (in reply to Onlineflamenco

I appreciate your reassurances, but I do not appreciate at all being PMed and told that messages like I posted here are "not very helpful" to you. What am I your lapdog?

The prices of your courses are now around 7 times higher than they were when you started. An increase that substantial (and in one go, not even an incremental increase) is bound to raise concern among your clients about the viability of your company. Care to explain what motivated such an increase if not financial trouble? I'd sure like to know. I'd also like to know how you justify a price that steep when similar or better quality courses (Encuentro series for example) are available for a fraction of that price. I enjoy the content you've made available, but in the current price conditions there's just no way I can recommend it to anyone. If you really want to reassure me, perhaps you could reply to himanshu.g's post and give us a detailed explanation of what you plan to do for your clients if one day you do go bankrupt (can we expect advanced notification and then to receive downloadable versions of all the videos, as he says is common practice? What's your plan in the event that happens?)

That’s great news. Are the individual courses going to be available again at the original prices? Why are all the courses now Eur397?

Absolutely. I have neither the intention nor the know-how to bypass copyright, which is why I'm insisting that Detmar provide a clear answer as to how he plans to make the content we purchased available to us in the event of bankruptcy, however unlikely that event may be.

RE: New online flamenco teaching website (in reply to Piwin

Piwin I understand your concern as I purchased the seven course package. But I think it's unfair to insinuate that the company is, or may be, about to go under. Have a little faith man! I'm sure if they do go under, they will take care of their clients. As to price, if you create something, be it a course, write a book, whatever, you get to set the price.

I guess you bought for less than than they charge now. You, and I, were fortunate to get that deal. At least I feel that way. The material is really good. I happen to be a fan of Paco Serrano. I feel fortunate I can access some of what I would have learned had I had the opportunity to study with him. And I am learning the stuff he has in the course and am enjoying it. It's a completely different approach than Encuentro, which of course, is also a great product.

RE: New online flamenco teaching website (in reply to Mark2

I'm not insinuating anything Mark. It's all out there in the open and all I've done is voice my concerns, not make any claims to know what in fact is the root of all of this. When I saw that they increased their prices that way, I immediately thought that they might be in financial trouble. It's not an uncommon practice if you need cash flow to announce a hike in prices so you get a large amount of purchases just before the announced hike. I may very well be wrong and I sincerely hope that I am, but that's where my mind went. And it doesn't help at all that no explanation was given for the increase in price, so we're left with sheer speculation. If we'd been told, oh I dunno, something like "we need investments for X or Y to expand our business so we're upping the price", or anything at all really, even that would have set my mind at ease. Sorry but a 7-fold increase with no rationale provided raises a bunch of red flags for me and I'm certainly not reassured when I get PMed and the company suggests I stop making public comments about them because it's "not very useful" to them.

Now I'm even more concerned because I simply asked what the plan was if ever they did go under, even if it's 100 years down the line. And I can only note, and regret, that apparently they have no plan at all, or at least nothing they're willing to share with their customers. Remember that time you were in a contractual relation with someone and you asked a straightforward question and he avoided the question but did add a heart emoji? ffs... Dunno man, a pro in my mind would have answered that they were doing fine, had not yet considered that contingency but would now work on laying out an appropriate solution for that contingency if it was of concern to their customers. Something like that. Apparently what I bought from them is fully dependent on contingencies and their goodwill and ability to wing it if ever the worst does happen. Anyways, I'm not going to drag this out as I've voiced my concerns and they've chosen not to address them. I think I'll stick with DVDs, books and other formats that are not platform-dependent from now on.

Final review and that's the last I'll be posting about this:
content: 5/5
accessibility: 3/5
customer relations: 1/5
pricing: 0/5
Do not recommend.

I have to say I agree with what Piwin says. The responses from Onlineflamenco seem very evasive. They don’t seem to take their customer’s concerns very seriously.

RE: New online flamenco teaching website (in reply to Onlineflamenco

It seems pretty clear to me from the email below.

I have a small business-this is my 39th year. I don't have a plan for going broke. I imagine if it happens, some people might not get paid, and some of my clients might suffer a little. Hopefully that will never happen and I spend zero time thinking about it or planning for it.

I did a job at SF International airport last year and they wanted a ten year warranty. I told the project manager I was 60 years old, and that if he calls when I'm 70 for warranty service, I'll be retired and might not even remember who he is.

I'll hopefully still be working on the material in those seven courses......... I'll have memorized the material by then so if the web site shuts down, I think I'll be good :-)

But if I live to be a hundred, and I want to perfect that Javier Conde picado thing, I'll be upset if the website is gone.........
