Well..... I don't know that Paco would have loved that...... Is his estate making any money from this?? If not I'm kind of disappointed in Cordoba.....

Have to agree with all the concerns above, I can't see how a cheap Chinese factory guitar 'honours' Paco at all, looks more like a cynical ploy to give the model some kudos and make more money.
Haven't played one but I really doubt that a cedar topped, rosewood back/sides guitar at this point will sound any different from a cheap classical in the same price range.

Agree with the cash in sentiments but I'd like to think the Paco family would get something in return; I can't imagine in USA law they'd allow to use someone's name without their being a fee involved.

Depends *if* the PDL estate has registered his name as a trademark to protect its use, and also *how* (i.e. what uses are protected). If not, the estate will not get a penny.
Its 'in honor' of his passing and 'inspired by several well-known instruments that were mainstays in the legendary guitarist’s collection'.
So no question of endorsement, approval, involvement etc.
And the model is called the 'F7 Paco' not the 'F7 Paco De Lucia'. I would say that is deliberate and I would bet there are no proceeds going anywhere other than Cordoba's pockets.

I think you might be right. Seems fairly undignified all things considered.

nice honor? more like a bad insult.
At Namm I met kenny hill guitar builder. He had a nice Reyes copy type guitar. Not bad. He admited his team built all the Cordoba special models (in their booth they had copies of reyes, hauser, Rodriguez and Torres). These guitars were all in the 4k range, and I asked why they didn't FP them like they did his own model. He said it was "too expensive" for them.
Anyway, wouldn't be surprised if they also had a hand in this model but honestly it looks pretty cheap, and has nada to do interms of looks with any of PDL guitars.

Nor, as far as I’m aware, do Cordoba guitars have anything to do with Córdoba.
The whole thing’s the same sort of turnout as Granny Brown’s Cake Mix (or whatever), so called because that looks better than Mel Shlabotnik’s Cake Mix.

You make some good points, Blondie. However, the use of a Celebrity’s name and likeness is neither as simple nor as hopeless as you explain it.
Generally, unlike losers like me, Celebrities are not entitled to the same protection of privacy. For instance, we could take the name, image or video of our Ricardo Marlow and place it on any post here, without infringing his right to privacy. However, there is a strict limitation to using Celebrities’ images/names and that is Commercial Exploitation. This restriction prevents us from using Ricardo’s name or image on anything we are selling (directly or even indirectly –a picture of Ricardo in the guitar case would suffice to trigger the prohibition).
(incidentally, in the US one does not need to register a Trademark to own it and protect it, but simply need to use it in commerce).
So, Cordoba may not use the name Paco De Lucia unless he or his estate had granted license (permission) to do so.
The more difficult question is whether the name “Paco” alone (without De Lucia) is sufficient to require license for its use and exploitation.
My view is that it does. The reason is that the question to be posed to the Jury is whether the use of the name “Paco” on a flamenco guitar is likely to be perceived as an instrument endorsed by Paco De Lucia, thus causing confusion to the public. If the answer to this question of fact (not of law) is yes, then Cordoba is infringing PDL’s rights and needs to pay Royalty to the Estate of the late Paco De Lucia.
I would take the case and I am certain, would prevail.
I also agree that it is a tasteless abuse and affront to the memory of PDL to associate the name of the most talented guitarist to one of the most mediocre guitars, Cordoba.

This is a $500 guitar which is introduced on Cordoba's website -and through press releases- as this:
"The F7 Paco offers a unique departure from traditional flamenco guitar tonewoods. In honor of Paco De Lucia’s untimely passing last year, Cordoba’s F7 Paco is inspired by several well-known instruments that were mainstays in the legendary guitarist’s collection"

one would think that if a company wanted to honor someone they would make a new line and make that line spectacular. to re-brand a $500 guitar that at best is a beach guitar is a slap in the face. cordoba makes "hommage" guitars costing a few thousand dollars and it seems they could have made a "hommage" guitar along the lines of a paco conde.

I think this Cordoba people trying to make a quick buck out of Paco's passing away is disgusting and very disrespectfull.... Especially this being a crap guitar wich has absolutely nothing to do with Paco's guitar or sound.

Yes , i go in and out of cordoba quite a bit some years and i havent seen a ' cordoba ' guitar there yet .... i have seen some cordoba cars .. though .. SEAT ..

interesting sentence there..it begs the question...when does a celebrity become a celebrity ?...
Mr Marlow is known, by people from many countries in the world .. and has his work heard in many countries too.. is that enough to make him a (minor) celebrity ...? and what , if there is such a thing .. is a minor celebrity ..?
So i can build the ''Marlow F7..hand made in my back garden out of specially hand chosen orange crates ... (thereby saving rain forests) , and nailed together with only the finest nails and super glue from the local hardware store .. ... put a pic of Rick on it and up for sale in the classified section .... sorted

I hope Ricardo Marlow knows that I will only make some money when hes passed on .... so he'll have to keep a low profile or sleep with one eye open ....business is business ......
