Question regarding pore filling

So I've decided to start French polishing instead of lacquer. I just pore filled with alcohol and pumice and I'm ready to start the bodying sessions. What is used to level sand after the pore filling? I read somewhere that 600 or 800 grit wet/dry sandpaper and oil was used. Opinions?

Don't get oil near it till you have a substantial build

I seem to por fill and body at the same time. I think the sanding pads I use are between 800 and 1200 grit for leveling. The real trick is not to let the pumice build up so you don't have to do any major cutting back.

I wouldn't use water either as if you go though you may end up raising the grain and having to do more filling!

If you just used alcohol with no shellac then there is nothing holding the pumice in. The alcohol has evaporated and the pumice may end up looking like the white powder that it is. Best to fill with pumice and shellac/alcohol. If you do it carefully, without overdoing it, it may not be necessary to cut it back at all.

Ethan although my pad was just alcohol and pumice, I first put on 3 wash coats of shellac. The shellac from the coats binds with the alcohol and pumice from my pad filling the pores. It works good.

I approve. I wondered if you had applied a seal coat.

As time consuming as it is, I find French polishing to be very therapeutic. A nice way to enjoy an afternoon with some good music in the background.
